THE MATHETES TRUST ADMINISTRATOR

The Mathetes Trust is a charitable trust which was formed in 2016. Our current administrator, who has been with us from the beginning, is now retiring, and we are looking for a successor.

The Administrator will be accountable to the Director of the Trust, Roger Morgan, and will also work closely with Alison Morgan. Roger and Alison are Anglican clergy, and since leaving parish ministry 10 years ago they have been working with an extensive network of clients and contacts both in the UK and in Africa.

In the UK we work mainly with church leaders. We offer a number of programmes to these leaders and their churches. We also publish and distribute books and course materials. The broad purpose of all of this is to promote Christian discipleship and growth of the church in the UK. This work has the potential to expand greatly. We work with a number of Associates who give their time on a voluntary basis.

In Africa we run a discipleship programme called Rooted in Jesus. This work is overseen by Alison Morgan. We work with Anglican dioceses and other networks, and are currently engaged with 80 dioceses or denominations in 16 African countries. We send out teams to provide training for clergy and lay leaders, equipping them to run the Rooted in Jesus discipleship programme in their churches. Alongside the adult programme there is a corresponding course for use with children in Sunday Schools called Rooted in Jesus Junior. We estimate that over 100,000 people have so far participated in these programmes, and demand for further training is high.

Job Description for the Administrator

The Administrator will work partly as a PA to Roger, whose computer skills are poor. The Administrator will be expected to quickly gain an overview of what Roger is doing, and help him to keep in effective contact with church leaders and Associates.

The Administrator will also be responsible for the day to day running of Rooted in Jesus, handling routine enquiries and dealing with correspondence, maintaining the database, keeping the accounts, communicating with team members in the UK, working with contacts in Africa to set up conferences and organise translation, formatting and printing of the course materials.

Roger and Alison are the authors of a number of publications, and the Administrator will be expected to liaise with the appropriate agencies and oversee the sale and distribution of these works. Roger produces new material all the time, always handwritten. The Administrator will be expected to turn what he writes into presentable handouts and booklets.

The Administrator is responsible for maintaining a good filing system and a good standard of communication with our clients and supporters. The Administrator should be able to develop friendly working relationships with our current and future clients.

The Administrator will keep the charity’s accounts, organise an annual audit and submit the necessary reports to the Charity Commission.

The Mathetes Trust needs to engage in regular fundraising. We have a database of people who support our work in one way or another. We also apply periodically to charitable trusts that may be willing to give generously to the kind of work we do. The Administrator will work with the Director in making such applications.

Person specification

The person we employ will need to have a high level of computer literacy and have good interpersonal skills. We hope that as the Administrator becomes part of the team s/he will wish to make their own contribution, bringing their own ideas to the work and helping us develop what we are doing in new and constructive ways.

We anticipate that the Administrator will have the following skills:

  • Proven administrative and organisational ability, including the ability to manage a simple database
  • Expertise with Microsoft Office particularly Word, Excel, Outlook  and Powerpoint
  • Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat, including creating pdf documents and files
  • Ability to keep accounts and reconcile these with bank statements
  • Ability to manage payslips and deal with HMRC
  • A confident telephone manner

Working hours

The Administrator will work for 15 hours per week, by arrangement. Some working from home may be possible. If the Administrator has childcare needs there could be flexibility regarding which hours are worked in any given week.

Pay

The Administrator will be self-employed, working on a contract for services basis for 48 weeks per year, allowing the Administrator to take 4 weeks’ holiday. The Administrator will be paid £8,640 pa (pro rata £21,600 pa). This is the equivalent of £12 per hour or £180 per week. If the applicant has exceptional qualifications or extensive experience, the pay could be increased by negotiation.
