Process Technician (Cleanroom)

Department of Engineering, Electrical Engineering Division

Salary: £26,243-£30,395

Reference: NM17061

The University has received EPSRC funding for a 6-year long, multi PI-research project aimed at developing new strategies for targeted drug delivery in the context of hard-to-treat cancers. The University of Cambridge will lead the research, which is in partnership with Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the University of Birmingham, Imperial College London, University College London and the University of Glasgow, as well as with several external partners.

Applications are invited for a Cleanroom Process Technician to work in the newly-funded EPSRC Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration centre. Based at Electrical Engineering in the West Cambridge site, the post will work between The Nanoscience Centre and the Institute for Manufacturing to develop processes for the fabrication of advanced biomedical and implantable devices for anti-cancer drug delivery, using combined lithographic and additive manufacturing techniques, such as 3D printing.

Reporting to the centre Director and the Divisional Laboratory Manager, and working closely with the team of cross-discipline researchers, the role-holder will be responsible for developing new processes for the fabrication of these advanced biomedical devices. As part of this, the role-holder must be familiar or experienced in cleanroom fabrication techniques, including vacuum & solution film deposition, wet & dry etching, photolithography, e-beam lithography, electronic packaging; as well as analysis with focused ion beam, SEM, EDX & other metrology. Training will be provided on additive manufacturing; however, previous experience will be beneficial.

The candidate will also give guidance and specialist advice on laboratory techniques and safe systems of work to students and staff who will use this facility to conduct research for the purposes of this EPSRC-funded project. Specialist skills are required in the operation of cleanrooms and vacuum systems and the correct use of equipment to include the safe use of hazardous and potentially explosive gases, dangerous acids and other chemicals.

The ability to adapt and modify existing procedures to satisfy unique experimental requests and to ensure that this does not compromise operational or safety requirements is desirable, as is the ability to supervise, guide and encourage others in completing experimental tasks. For this work, previous experience in training and defining standard operating procedures would be an advantage.

Applicants should be educated to HNC/BSc degree or equivalent level qualification in an engineering or a closely related field. You should also have experience of working in a cleanroom (preferably research based) environment, and be able to operate and give guidance to others in the use and application of experimental apparatus that is typically found in cleanroom laboratories. You should also have sound IT and communication skills.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 6 years in the first instance.
