Job Summary
As EIC, your central role is to be the figurehead for the brands in the market and lead the editorial direction of both brands. You should oversee the day to day production, decide content, manage staff, determine direction, liaise with your managing director and the group content director.
Key responsibilities
Staff
- Help maintain a team of high quality, motivated and effective staff
- Ensure good communication and teamwork throughout the editorial team
- Encourage and develop all staff members, offering one-to-one coaching and assistance where necessary
- Conduct recruitment interviews, formal appraisals and salary reviews where appropriate
Strategy
- Develop strong relationships in the editorial and sales teams
- Communicate a coherent content strategy to all staff, ensuring everyone is aware of common goals and targets, and that they have the resources necessary to do their jobs
- Ensure organisational systems are easily understood and managed in your absence
- Work with the Group Production Editor to ensure workflows and processes are adhered to
- Target editorial coverage to fit the interests and needs of the readership
- Monitor rival publications and adjust your coverage/performance to compete
Day to day
- Take responsibility for quality control in everything that goes into your titles
- Work with section editors to ensure everything runs smoothly
- Plan well ahead, ensuring all staff know both what will be in future issues of the title, and their part in realising it
- Ensure the highest standards of accuracy in the titles, as well as having regard for tone, style and legality of all copy
- Generate ideas for editorial in all sections of the title
- Work with the section heads to ensure consistency of coverage across the title
- Work to ensure that the title operates within allocated budgets
- Set a high standard in terms of general behaviour, appearance and professionalism
Additional responsibilities
- Decide which new or previously published content will appear on the brand's websites, and oversee the uploading of that content
- Ensure that a minimum amount of content is uploaded each week (at least three stories), and promote it on social media channels
- Decide on the content to be included in weekly e-newsletters, and oversee its production, liaising with the relevant team member tasked with uploading it
- Write new issue blurbs for subscriber emails and new issue stories, to coincide with the publication of each new issue of the magazines
- The editor in chief will be required to visit events and exhibitions as required in the course of the year
Essential skills and experience
- Excellent writing and literacy skills including the ability to sub-edit and proofread to a high standard
- Creativity and flair
- Financial awareness
- Excellent understanding of media law
- Good market knowledge of the specific media in which you work
- Excellent project management and people management skills
- An appreciation of the inter-relationships of all publishing functions
- Video reviewing and presentation skills
- Ability to take photographs of a high enough standard to appear in print and online
- Knowledge of how a website CMS works, and the ability to effectively upload content to it
- Familiarity with Facebook and Twitter and how to use it to promote content
