Job Title: Carer / Personal Assistant.
Hours: Usually 14 hours per week (may be less when she accesses weekend respite care approx. every 5 weeks)
You will be required to support a young lady for up to 14 hours per week depending upon you availability. It may be requested that you are flexible with your hours depending on the families’ needs but again this would be dependent upon your availability. This will be discussed with you with at least one weeks notice.
Usual working hours are currently envisaged to be 2 evenings per week (probably Wed & Thurs), 15.00 – 19.00 and Sat or Sun (alternating), 10.00 – 16.00.
You may also be requested to support the family by covering when the other PA is absent during annual leave periods or sickness but this would be by mutual agreement and is not obligatory. Any variations in hours would be subject to mutual agreement & may result in working more than the 14 hours per week stated above according to employee availability.
Work Environment: Traditional loving family environment. Parent is seeking support with plans to extend and develop the support and activities for his disabled daughter; this may involve time accessing community facilities as well as in the home environment. Job Purpose: To support and assist this young lady with all the routine tasks such as eating, dressing, washing and toileting, as total assistance is required. To spend time playing with and enabling her to undertake the activities that she enjoys.
Rate of pay: £9.00 per hour.
Holiday: 5.6 weeks holiday pro-rata
Responsible to: Directly accountable to and taking direction from the employer and/or their representative (parent).
Main Tasks: The post requires someone who will offer the appropriate level of support to a young disabled lady within her family home. This will enable her to enjoy activities and will promote her development. You will be required to play and be involved in any activities that she is capable of participation in. She enjoys listening to music, water play, hand massage and general tactile activities. The position may require you to assist the family in activities outside the home, such as visiting the shops, park and other places of interest.
Assist with care tasks; all personal care, administration of medication, lifting and handling (experience desirable however training will be given). This young lady suffers from epilepsy and “rescue” medication for epilepsy has to be administered at times (again experience is desirable but training will also be provided for this). Helping/making snacks and drinks as and when required. Support will be required with feeding also. Assistance would be required to encourage this young lady to make choices wherever possible. The PA would be required to develop an understanding of this young lady’s communication methods, seeking advice and support from the parent should you require. The PA would be required to feedback any information you feel is of interest to her parent regarding this young lady’s health and wellbeing.
The PA would be required to ensure any necessary documentation is completed as instructed. The PA would be required to be aware of procedures for accessing additional support should it be required. To carry out other duties or activities connected with the role which the employer may reasonably request. The PA would be required to develop an understanding and have a positive attitude towards a young person with a disability. The PA would be required to develop an awareness of safeguarding practices in relation to vulnerable people.
Special Conditions; An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is required for the post and the cost of this will be met by the employer. The post is subject to 6 months probationary period.

Essential Critiera
- A non-smoker is essential.
- The PA must be kind, patient, honest, flexible and reliable.
- The PA must possess a good sense of humour, with a cheerful disposition & caring nature.
Desirable Critiera (but not essential)
- The PA should have a flexible approach as the times stated in hours of work may change but changes would be subject to the PA’s availability.
- It may be beneficial for the PA to have some knowledge or understanding of epilepsy or willingness to learn as training will be given.
- It may be beneficial for the PA to have previous experience of supporting a young person who has a learning disability.
- It may be beneficial for the PA to have experience of supporting someone who experiences severe difficulty with verbal communication and making their needs known.
