Systems Environmental Manager - Submarines

We are looking for a SC cleared Systems Environmental Manager with experience of working within the Nuclear Industry/MOD nuclear teams & of radiological waste.

The Submarine Environmental and Safety Office (SMESO) provides environmental and safety assurance and policy services to support SDA across the safety domains. The SMESO supports the SDA Project Teams, interfaces with wider DE&S and MoD work streams and provides the lead interface to Other Government Departments (OGD) and national forums in the areas of nuclear policy and regulation.
This post is the Environmental Specialist post in the SDA Safety Team. The SDA has a critical need to have and use this expertise to fulfil our obligations in LoD to the CEO and is also supported by a series of regulatory findings and corrective actions placed against the centre and PTs.
Key tasks:

-To develop and publish SDA environmental strategy and policy.
-To provide the SDA with environmental assurance through auditing and performance reporting to the SDA ExCo.

The post requires an understanding and ability to interpret and apply environmental legislation and policy as it applies to the SDA. The duties will include:

-Setting up and tailoring management systems, supervising those systems and arranging or undertaking audits to demonstrate that those systems are compliant with policy and TLB instructions, appropriate and functioning correctly.
-A full understanding (including applying) of the principles and techniques of system safety risk assessment and environmental impact analysis as well as being able to interpret the results and provide advice to senior managers and stakeholders

Required:

-Level 6 qualification ideally in an environmental field (environmental science, environmental management, marine ecology/biology, marine science etc) or at least 7 years experience in an environmental role.
-Ideally membership (practitioner level or chartered environmentalist) with a relevant institute - e.g. IEMA, IWEM, IES, IEEM (this demonstrates that they will/should be able to work and drive and environmental improvement strategy with minimal to no support).
-Environmental experience within the maritime domain
-An understanding of the regulators, legislation, teams, policies and processes applicable to submarines or maritime domain.

And ideally:

-Experience of working within the Nuclear Industry or MOD nuclear teams.
-Experience and understanding of radiological waste would be advantageous as can be a flexible resource within the team.
