FSB seeks a Senior Policy Advisor to assist in driving the FSB Wales policy operation and to lead on identified projects, both internally to members and externally to a wide range of stakeholders and influencers.
The Senior Policy Advisor will support the Policy Manager in identifying, researching, developing and promoting policy positions on Wales policy issues, as well as supporting the External Affairs Advisor in advocating FSB policy to key decision-makers and influencers including politicians, Cabinet Secretaries and Ministers, civil servants, representative bodies and other officials.

Senior Policy Advisor Key Areas of Accountability
In support of the Policy Manager
- Briefs and acts as advisor on key policy issues for the Wales Policy Unit Chair and members.
- Maintains an awareness of political and legislative developments in Wales, identifying their impact on small businesses. Responds to these developments as appropriate, referring relevant policy issues to the London Office when necessary.
- Manages FSB Wales commissioned research projects working with the Policy Manager and Wales Policy Unit.
- Develops subject expertise as it relates to the priorities set out in the FSB Wales Business Plan.
In support of the External Affairs Advisor and the Head of External Affairs (Wales)
- Represents the FSB on external groups, bodies and forums as required.
- Organises Wales-wide policy focussed FSB events.
- Provides the secretariat and takes a lead on supporting any relevant Cross-Party Groups at the National Assembly for Wales.
- Provides briefing and support to the Wales Policy Chair
- Provides interviews to broadcast media as directed by the External Affairs Advisor or Head of External Affairs.
Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree with an award of 2:1 or above in a relevant subject and discipline.
- Proven policy experience gained from employment in one or more of the following:
- Welsh political party, either as elected representative or in a policy function;
- Welsh Civil Service or related agency;
- National Assembly for Wales Parliamentary Service;
- Policy or public affairs research and monitoring post in similar organisation or agency.
- Good analytical skills in relation to government consultation work and other related documents.
- Good writing skills in relation to the production of in-house reports, briefings and publications.
- Good numerical ability in relation to survey work and statistical analysis.
- Good presentation skills, both verbal and written.
Good project management skills.
Specific Requirements
- Ability and willingness to work irregular hours (evenings and weekends) as and when required
- Willingness to undertake travel across Wales and the UK
