Our client's Welfare Rights Project has an excellent track record in Salford and they need a new person to join their team, funded under the United Utilities Trust Fund.
Job Title: Welfare Rights & Debt Advisor
Contract Length: Fixed term contract - 1 year
Hours: Part time 22.5 hours p/w
Salary: GBP22,212 pro rata
Location(s): Salford

You will provide a comprehensive welfare benefits and debt advice/financial capability service to clients with mental health issues, focusing on outreach at food banks and housing associations and other agencies within the city.
If you are intelligent, sensitive to the needs of people with mental health difficulties, committed to supporting and promoting their rights and have excellent written and verbal skills, then our client would like to hear from you. The Certificate of Money Advice Practice qualification is also desirable, although not essential to the role.
This job works with vulnerable adults and requires an enhanced disclosure under the Disclosure and Barring Service checks of criminal background. The charity also require at least 1 years' experience of advising in this sector, either voluntary or paid and references that are satisfactory to the organisation. You will also need a full driving licence and access to your own vehicle as the role requires travel to and from outreaches and home visits where necessary.

Job Description/Duties:
  • To carry a caseload and work with clients on a one-to-one basis, to provide welfare rights advice, debt counselling & advice, information, support and representation
  • To maintain an information resource and provide information and casework support for the charity on welfare rights
  • To maintain and disseminate up-to-date knowledge of welfare rights policy, structure and legislation
  • To develop and maintain effective relationships with key local and regional welfare rights service providers (including CAB's, locality mental health teams and inpatient welfare rights services)
  • To work within and meet agreed case-working standards, monitoring systems/requirements and service goals
  • To provide the service in a range of styles and venues, which may include providing a drop-in service, telephone-based support, and work at different sites
  • To maintain up to date and accurate records around all work/interventions
  • To work collaboratively as part of the team in providing services to clients
  • Where appropriate, to assist in the recruitment, selection, training and supervision of volunteers and patient representatives
  • To work as a member of the team, contributing to service planning and developments
Person specification:
  • Able to understand wishes and needs of mental health clients and speak up on their behalf
  • Have at least 1 year experience of delivering Welfare Rights & Debt advice in a related setting
  • Able to deliver written and verbal reports of a high standard
  • Able to prioritise and organise own caseload and maintain up to date work records
  • Able to use Microsoft Word and database packages, and to be administratively self-servicing
  • Able to engage with vulnerable adults and establish or maintain effective relationships with professionals across varying disciplines
  • Good negotiation and problem solving skills
  • Able to work as part of a team and on own initiative
  • Good writing skills with the ability to draft correspondence, and reports
  • Good numeracy skills with the ability to carry out efficient calculations and prepare budgets for clients
  • Understanding of and commitment to equal opportunities and diversity
  • Interest in service user empowerment and participation
  • Interest in Mental Health Law and Mental Health services
  • Written and verbal communication is concise and accurate
  • Able to develop and maintain positive working relationships
