Within Elsevier's Science, Technology and Medical Journal (STMJ) Publishing Organisation we are looking for a Publisher to strengthen our Physical Sciences unit. In total STMJ consists of approximately 660fte mainly based from offices in the UK, USA, The Netherlands, China and India. It is responsible for publishing over 2,000 journal titles (24% of the global market), with new journal launches and society contract acquisitions ensuring annual growth.
As the Publisher Biomaterials, you deliver realization and business plans aiming at the development and maintenance of a journals portfolio or defined list of particular journals within a delegated scientific/specialty area(s) in Materials Science in line with the overall STMJ strategy and objectives. You manage and develop an assigned portfolio of journal titles, including Open Access journals, on a complex level.
To excel in this role, you understand the importance of maintaining a strong network both with and beyond current Elsevier editors, authors and societies. Due to your experience within the Publishing industry you can also easily participate in complex industry discussions with high level stakeholders. Furthermore, you demonstrate the ability to work independently and focus on being a lead example to your peers.
This position can be based in Beijing, Oxford or Amsterdam. You will report to the Publishing Director.
Your responsibilities
- Oversee the overall portfolio management, including development of non-subscription commercial and Open Access opportunities
- Oversee and where necessary guiding negotiation of editorial and title contracts
- Make an immediate impact and build and maintain a strong network both with, and beyond, current Elsevier editors, authors and societies
- Contribute to the organization and success of proprietary conferences in the field of biomaterials: i.e. Nano Today
- Have overall responsibility for the journal product portfolio with emphasis on content growth (both subscription and open access) and quality strategy
- Manage content growth organically and by (title) acquisition as well as managing innovation of content formats and content extensions and channels,
- Contribute to the premium brand extension and content retention strategy
- Participate in projects that are run across STMJ and contribute to projects within Elsevier that require STMJ representation.
What you should bring
- PhD / Academic degree; in materials or related field is not essential but would be an advantage
- 2 - 4 years relevant Science/Technical/Medical publishing experience, including experience in open access
- Proven track record of full awareness, application and remaining up to date on Technology, Social Media and content enhancement in that context
- Experience in working in a complex, matrix international environment
- Willingness to travel at least 30% of time is a requirement
- Eye for Business development
- Strong communication skills
