YHA is a not-for-profit trading charity. Our Purpose is to transform young lives forever through travel and real adventure. The money we make, we re-invest into our places, people and programmes so that we can continue improving access to travel and adventure for young people.

Following our current recruitment process to find an Interim Head of HR who will drive our People Team during the next 3-6 months we are now looking after the longer-term plan.

We are excited to announce that we now have an opportunity for an experience HR professional to join our organisation as Head of People on a permanent basis.

The role of the Head of People is to develop, implement and be accountable for the human resources strategy within YHA (England and Wales). Ensuring it is aligned to the key themes of the organisations 3 year Business Plan.

As we inspire young people who access our facilities we also want our Head of People to plan and support a culture of inspiring talented people and teams to maximise employee potential within our organisation.

Our people team deliver a professional and comprehensive HR service and we are looking for a Head of People who can continue to drive this delivery in an efficient and effective manner.

Our Head of People's key role responsibilities include but are not exhaustive of:

Developing, implementing and managing HR strategies in line with the Business Plan, ensuring HR plans support the needs of the business, whilst being flexible to adapt to business changes.
Leading and directing the HR team to deliver a comprehensive HR service to the business.
Effectively managing HR resources including researching and negotiating with third party suppliers to ensure best value, efficiency and effectiveness, managing the HR budget appropriately in achieving this.
In conjunction with the People & Operations Director, manage the organisation's reward strategy.
Analysing and evaluating HR processes and interventions against business needs, making decisions and proposals for improvements and implementing agreed changes to maximise efficiency.
Working with Operations and L&D colleagues, developing and maintaining succession planning and talent management strategies which support business growth and increase leadership capability.
Providing HR metrics and data to support the business and enable key decisions to be made to improve operations and performance.
Managing projects and initiatives, defining risks and opportunities to ensure a solution focused approach.
Accountability for a robust recruitment and retention strategy, developing YHA's recruitment brand and creating an EVP.
Responsibility for delivering the employee engagement agenda to ensure a highly engaged workforce.
Implementing and monitoring employee benefits and well-being strategies/initiatives to engage and motivate the workforce to maximise potential.
Managing and minimising risk to the organisation through effective HR policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with employment law.
Supporting the team and the wider business in handling complex ER issues, including dispute mediation and coaching/supporting direct reports and line managers in reaching appropriate outcomes.
Lead consultation and negotiation with the recognised Trade Union (Unite), brokering solutions as required.
Develop and Instil ownership and accountability in line managers for managing and motivating individuals and teams to deliver against business objectives.

So who are we looking to appoint for our Head of People?

A HR professional with a proven record of strategic planning and practical experience
CIPD qualified (Chartered Membership level) (highly desirable) with evidence of commitment to CPD
Proven experience of leadership at a senior level, demonstrating credibility and gravitas with commitment to upholding professional standards
Effective communication and influencing skills, building collaborative relationships with others
Experience of working and negotiating with Trade Unions
Experience of leading, developing and motivating a team
Proven budgetary management experience
Experience of project management from initiation through to implementation and review
Experience of leading change
Results focused with commitment to achieving goals. Tenacious approach to delivery and quality of output whilst, at the same time, displaying integrity in own behaviour and dealings with others
Skilled and effective facilitator and presenter, with experience of managing conflict
Strong working knowledge of employment law and the ability to apply this using a pragmatic and common-sense approach
Ability to solve problems with a pragmatic and commercially sound approach
Demonstrate commitment to the vision, mission and values of YHA

Due to the YHA network covering England and Wales and our National Office based in Matlock, Derbyshire we do require all candidates to hold a full driving licence and have a willingness to work flexibly, including regional travel on a regular basis, overnights and occasional weekend working.
