The Department of Engineering is looking for an experienced Software Developer to develop and support a scalable web platform as part of an ambitious and exciting project for the Centre for Sustainable Road Freight research group. You will join the Department's Information and Computing Services Group (ICS) which is made up of more than 30 staff with expertise in networking, windows and linux systems, messaging, storage, printing and software development.

This is an ideal opportunity for an individual seeking a position where they will be exposed to a wide range of technologies in a busy and dynamic research environment, who enjoy interacting with customers and progressing their technical skills. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a high level of experience in a number of areas and have a willingness to develop expertise across the full range of skills required. 

An ideal candidate would have demonstratable skills and experience with:

  • Designing RESTful APIs
  • Containerisation and continuous integration
  • Java, Python or comparable web development languages
  • SQL, Postgres or comparable database technologies  
  • Code repository and issue tracking systems

The position will be embedded in Centre for Sustainable Road Freight research group and will be working closely with academics, researchers and industry partners to develop software platforms, maintain infrastructure and support research. The Centre is a collaboration between Cambridge and Heriot-Watt Universities and organisations in the freight and logistics sectors, its purpose is to research engineering and organizational solutions to make road freight economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.  A successful candidate should be highly motivated and able to work autonomously as well collaboratively.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 48 months in the first instance.
