Job Introduction
The Western Daily Press is looking for an experienced and versatile print journalist to join the best performing regional daily newspaper in the Reach stable.
You'll be based in the buzzing city of Bristol but covering a vast circulation area that stretches from Hereford to Weymouth and Chepstow to Salisbury.
Our success comes from understanding our audience, who are mainly in the market towns and rural areas of Somerset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.
You will be part of a small team doing a big job putting together a well-loved newspaper which has been the champion of the West since 1858.
About the company
Reach PLC is one of the UK's largest multimedia publishers, with an award-winning portfolio of five national and 130 regional titles and more than 500 digital products.
We are audience-focused and while our business is digital first, our successful print brands remain a key part of our portfolio. Our journalists and titles consistently win awards for agenda-setting news and innovative storytelling.
Role Responsibility
- Your role will be to write primarily for our premium Saturday edition, our biggest selling by far
- You will be expected to source and write exclusive stories to lead our Saturday editions along with agenda setting news features and human interest news
- You will liaise with freelance photographers to organise images for your stories and provide words for their pictures
- You will be expected to generate your own story ideas and pitch them to our head of content
- This is primarily a news role but will include magazine and potentially sport feature writing too
- You will promote the Western Daily Press, and in particular the Saturday edition, through social media, particularly Twitter and Instagram
- You may sometimes be asked to work weekends or evenings and cover other roles within the team
The ideal candidate
- Is an experienced senior reporter who loves and understands the medium of print
- Has a track record of finding and writing original stories on a big news patch
- Can turn their hand to challenges as diverse as interviewing the prime minister, writing a colour piece from a country show, compiling a news feature on the high streets crisis and applying a light touch to a quirky human interest story
- Has an interest in and understanding of rural affairs and life in the countryside
- Is organised, self-motivated, good at time management and can prioritise their workload
- Has their own car and clean driving licence
- Enjoys being part of a small team who pull together to get the best possible paper on the shelves
