Job Introduction
We've got a rare and exciting opportunity for a senior digital expert to drive audience growth on our three high-performing websites - Plymouth Live, Devon Live and Cornwall Live.
The Regional Audience Editor will work across the three sites, using data and analytics, innovative storytelling and new platforms to help us attract, engage and keep new audiences.
The successful candidate will be self-motivated and full of creative ideas, able to tell a story on multiple platforms through written words, video, audio and pictures and will be across all social media channels and search opportunities.
Your job will be to increase loyal visitors to our site by enhancing their experience with us and find new audiences by building new platforms and engagement tools.
This is a strategic role, working alongside the Regional Digital Editor and editors of each of the three websites in a brilliant team in our busy newsroom in Plymouth.
Devon Live, Cornwall Live and Plymouth Live are growing rapidly and reach around 25million page views a month. We want you to innovate and take our coverage to the next level.
The job requires some evening, early morning and weekend work and applicants with access to a vehicle would be at an advantage.
Role Responsibility
- Monitor performance of content using analytics tools such as GA, Chartbeat, Crowdtangle and BuzzSumo and provide performance reports, playing an active role in conferences
- Use digital analytics to set content priorities
- Support content editors in the planning and scheduling of content packages
- Innovate to find new audiences and platforms to deliver content to those audiences
- Use analytics and social data to help inform decision-making on homepage, mobile and apps as well as social media channels
- Develop content and platform plans around key events in the calendar
- Provide clear briefings and feedback to the team of digital content creators and editors on publishing requirements as well as appropriate pastoral care and line management
- Help develop the team by effective use of 121s, Now&Next, mentoring, on-the-job coaching and training
- Lead management of rotas/diary as appropriate
- Ensure effective communication between relevant people/departments
- Ensure content is published with the correct metadata at all times
- Organise and plan live event coverage including briefing reporters and setting up/planning/contributing to delivery of live blogs
- Ensure brand character is maintained on digital platforms and that digital best practice and style guides are adhered to in terms of metadata, optimisation and content formatting
- Ensure websites and apps are well maintained to ensure content is up to date and correctly formatted
The ideal candidate
- A Trinity Mirror or equivalent senior journalist qualification (or relevant time-served experience)
- At least two years experience in content writing, editing and/or management
- Demonstrable experience of team management and motivation
- Proven digital skills including experience of using a content management system
- An excellent understanding of SEO, search, social and digital audience behaviour
- An excellent understanding of how content is shared and promoted through social media
- Ability to use and apply learning through digital analytics
- Ability to work well under deadline pressure
- Ability to edit pictures and video
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to make a positive contribution to daily conferences
- Adaptable and flexible, with a flexible approach to shifts
- Creativity and flair
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to work under pressure and deliver to deadlines
- A positive, can-do attitude
- Detailed understanding of editorial strategy
