Disabled Students’ Allowances Assessor (Trainee)

             Trainee Starting Salary 22K

       37.5 hours per week

(increasing to 24K on successful completion of training)    

Chace is an independent DSA Needs Assessment Centre, making recommendations for Higher Education students with disabilities including dyslexia.

The successful candidates will engage in a training program which will equip them with the skills required for independent assessing.  The training period involves working in tandem with an experienced assessor and the Chace team to provide a quality service for students.   We are looking for trainee assessors with excellent analytical skills, exceptional communication and the ability to write detailed reports. Applicants must be educated to degree level and have relevant transferable work experience. 

The successful candidates will be based in South Wales and be expected to travel between the different centres. A driving licence is therefore essential.

Purpose of Job

To contribute towards the delivery of a proactive and professional service, assessing study support and IT requirements for dyslexic and disabled students.  The emphasis of the post is in Newport.  To contribute to the development, expertise and resources of Chace assessments.  Chace has assessment centres in Newport, Treforest and Cardiff as well as centres in Cheltenham, Gloucester and Worcester.

Training program: the employee will engage in a training program prior to independent assessing, which includes: observations of assessors’ interviews, a personal development portfolio, review of assessors’ written reports, written reports quality assured and to be observed undertaking assessments.

Main Duties

  • Undertake study skill and technology assessments (assessments of need) for disabled students in receipt of the Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA) within the prescribed time scale for quality assurance purposes.
  • Be fully conversant with and demonstrate assistive technology.
  • Liase with HE institutions where appropriate.
  • Provide detailed written reports on information gathered for the recommendation of the DSA funding.
  • Undertake continued assessor training and continued professional development to ensure a professional service and to meet the requirements of an audit.
  • To be conversant with and uphold Chace’s policies and maintain an overview of all related external polices including the Equality Act 2010.
