About the Role

Surrey County Council is the Highway Authority for the County of Surrey.

It is responsible for the maintenance of countywide highway assets, including 3000 miles of carriageway and 4 square miles of footway, in addition to a wide ranging infrastructure that includes 1200 structures and a large number of surface water drainage systems and safety barrier systems.

Part of the statutory duties of Surrey County Council is to identify, assess and repair safety defects on the highway; this is in addition to an annual planned maintenance programme of road and footway repairs and resurfacing.

To help manage the key area of keeping our network safe, we are looking for an enthusiastic person to work as a Highway Safety Inspector within one of our two Area Safety Teams, each of which has 7 Inspectors.

The teams are co-located with the County Term Maintenance contractor at our Godstone or Merrow highways depots and the role is a mix of office and field work, therefore it is essential that you have a full driving licence.

The ideal candidate will be someone with enthusiasm and a willingness to work as a part of a team. You will be fully supported with a training programme, including the opportunity to gain City & Guilds qualifications in streetworks monitoring and highway safety inspections. Highway Safety inspections are carried out in a designated area but you will also work with different team members across the county as required.

To be shortlisted to interview for this position your application will clearly evidence:

  1. Communication skills
  2. Customer service skills
  3. Ability to be flexible
  4. An aptitude to start or develop a career in highway engineering
  5. A willingness to participate in the necessary training to achieve the required qualifications.

Additional Information

The job advert closes at 23:59 on 14th August 2018.

Interviews will take place on the 31st August 2018.
