Outreach Recovery Navigator - Substance Misuse Charity

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team in Exeter that will cover outreach opportunities in the city as well as rurally in East, Mid and South Devon.

This post will work alongside other outreach services across Devon providing a unified response and will include working closely with clinical assessment centre staff to improve opportunities for access and engagement into treatment for this population.  As an Outreach Recovery Navigator, you will support the engagement of people into Together and other services to reduce harm, prevent drug related deaths and support people to access appropriate treatment, services and support.

The post holder will promote strength-based working, recovery orientation, visible and attainable recovery from first contact and system wide engagement and joint working with other services.  We understand how difficult it can be for individuals to take the first step and seek support especially for those who are homeless or street attached and we recognise the need to make access into treatment quick, easy and a positive experience for people once they build up the courage to do this. Working as an Outreach Recovery Navigator you will have the opportunity to help shape an individual’s view of what treatment can be like and to ensure that following receipt of an effective, meaningful and positive initial experience, that individuals want to continue to engage with our service and receive the support we are able to offer.

As an Outreach Recovery Navigator, you will provide an integrated service through the provision of comprehensive assessment, triage, risk assessment and recovery planning; delivering a range of brief and structured interventions.  This includes liaising effectively with partnership agencies in order to ensure continuity of care, key working and access to appropriate services, especially working alongside Julian House the provider of Assertive Outreach Services in Exeter, East Devon and Teignbridge.

The Together integrated service opened its doors on April 1st, 2018 and so you will be joining us at a very exciting time. Integration means that our service welcomes people at any stage in their recovery journey, starting with the open end of harm reduction, being our needle and syringe programmes, using opportunistic advice and information skills, through to brief interventions, extended interventions and structured treatment. Our team of clinicians (Nurses, non-medical prescribers and Specialist substance misuse Doctors) ensure we have a high quality community detoxification offer as well as opioid substitution therapy. As service users progress they will move into the ‘aftercare’ and then post treatment element of recovery. Together is currently reviewing its programme delivery options, including Smart UK groups, Smart friends and family, a range of structured / unstructured interventions and assertive linkage to 12 step recovery mutual aid groups.

Day to day our service users will access a range of interventions, including: key-working, strengths based assessment, recovery planning, structured group and 1:1 work. Clients will work jointly with their key-worker and prescribing nurse in order to ensure receipt of the safest person centred treatment experience. As an Outreach Recovery Navigator, you will support your colleagues within the service by generating enthusiasm and motivation at engagement and assessment stage, encouraging individuals to engage in the recovery programmes we offer in Devon as well as become involved in the communities they live in so that they connect with others and feel purposeful in everyday living.  This may sound like a tall order but we believe in the Together model and in the team in Devon that have been driving our vision forward. The Together philosophy is embedded with the asset based community development approach, which is a way of working with others that has great resonance with EDP Values.

Ideally, you will already have previous experience of working in a similar field, either in the community or a similar environment, including undertaking assessments and delivering a range of evidence based substance misuse psychosocial interventions.  You will be comfortable dealing with the emotional content of sessions and be able to utilise MI and CBA approaches to create discrepancy and positively challenge attitudes and beliefs that may be holding someone back from achieving their goals. Some knowledge and understanding of mental health issues would be advantageous.

In addition, you will be able to demonstrate excellent communication, organisation and time management skills and be confident in managing your own priorities in order to manage a workload with competing demands.  You will have at least five GCSE’s (or equivalent) and either hold or be willing to undertake a Vocational Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care. A further qualification in a relevant area such as Nursing, Health and Social Care, Community Development, Psychology related, whilst not essential, would be an advantage.

Just as importantly, you will have a genuine interest in the understanding of substance misuse problems and a positive recovery focused attitude.  You will be keen to develop professionally through our training programme and will demonstrate a high level of integrity and enthusiasm for working within the un-structured direct access ‘front door’ of our service as well as the structured group programmes that we run on a continuous cycle.
