This role leading the GSMA’s Mobile Money programme is an opportunity to accelerate a major new commercial market whilst delivering societal benefit. To achieve this, you will be a seasoned executive comfortable operating in commercial and regulatory environments, with rich experience in the mobile payments sector and someone who is both passionate and skilled in delivering industry collaboration. The ideal candidate will have views on the future of the industry in a rapidly changing digital landscape, and grasp big-picture trends affecting people, governments and economies in the developing world.

Key responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • owning the vision and strategy for GSMA’s work on mobile money, ensuring greater scale in the industry and charting opportunities for business model innovation;
  • creating strategies and implementation plans to accelerate adoption of key industry initiatives such as the Mobile Money Certification and APIs;
  • setting the thought leadership agenda in close consultation with senior industry executives;
  • representing the GSMA at high-profile forums, championing mobile money internally and externally;
  • leading engagement with mobile operators and donors, including corresponding governance structures;
  • being responsible for ensuring the programme is effectively funded, with appropriate resources to deliver;
  • inspiring and leading a team of 30+ FTE, maintaining a strong reputation for driving quality and achieving significant impact for the industry; and
  • driving collaboration of the Mobile Money team within Mobile for Development and across the GSMA business.

Criteria for selection

The candidate must possess the following attributes:

  • have a strong background in mobile financial services with experience gained either within a telco, bank, start-up, payments scheme, consultancy, regulator body, donor or other financial inclusion organisation;
  • able to evidence a strong commercial background, ideally having led a substantial business unit with direct P&L responsibility;
  • can lay claim to a deep understanding of telco economics and an acute insight and ability to support the execution of service roll outs within mobile operators;
  • have experience of working globally, especially in emerging markets;
  • an exceptional leader: you are charismatic and energetic, able to inspire teams and drive high performance and builds valuable peer networks with internal and external stakeholders, including C-level executives;
  • able to work effectively in a highly matrixed structure to positively influence peers and support cross functional collaboration;
  • must have work experience from mobile money services in both sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia;
  • have a depth of knowledge from mobile money operations in East Africa at OpCo and / or Group level;
  • a strong telecoms background preferred, with emphasis on emerging markets; and
  • willing to travel, sometimes at very short notice.

Salary: £120,000 per annum
