Graduate Quality Inspector

We are currently recruiting for a graduate quality inspector to join us within J. Marr Seafoods Ltd, a successful Yorkshire commodities trading firm specialising in seafoods, fish, poultry and meat. It is a unique and exceptional career opportunity for someone who is confident, thorough, with an eye for detail. The role is based abroad in various locations (all near a marine coastline) and would suit someone both intelligent as well as practical who has an interest in working abroad. You may have some experience within the marine environment or fisheries industry but we are open minded as to your background. As long as you have some commercial working experience, a solid academic track record and able to demonstrate successful results and covering your bases in your work, we are interested in hearing from you.

As a graduate quality inspector you would be joining our supercargo team. You would nominally be based in our office in Hessle but would spend significant amounts of time abroad in various locations. These locations could include Namibia, Mauritania, Morocco, Chile, Peru, Japan, Norway and the Faroe Islands, but it will depend on business need. Time spent abroad in various locations would vary but will typically be between two weeks and three months. You would be the front face of the company, dealing with both suppliers and clients abroad. Your role is quality control, making sure the fish and seafood products the firm trade are checked for correct quality, size, freshness, packaging and other key criteria.

You would also spend some time supervising loading work from and onto vessels which includes coordinating between supply trawlers and chartered reefer vessels the loading operations. Each loading operation is an interesting small project in its own right. There is also some work in terms of customer claims making sure these are dealt with fairly and correctly whilst protecting the company's interests.

Commodities trading can be complex - and trading is a fast paced exciting environment. Quality inspection, sometimes called supercargo work, is the support backbone to make sure the trading service is delivered to the right standard that the company is known for. You need to be bright, thorough, and be able to assert yourself with sometimes quite senior and important people from different cultural backgrounds. Your responsibilities as a Commodities Trader will include:

• Maintaining good relationships with suppliers, clients and logistics partners of the company.
• Quality checks of all commodities (typically fish and seafood) condition in terms of quality, size, weight, freshness, texture, smell, packaging and labelling.
• Maintain a professional bearing at all times, including being able to be firm and assertive in challenging conversations, but able to offer flexibility when reasonable.
• Checking reefer vessel conditions against agreed specifications prior to loading.
• Receiving load plans from company, receiving stowage plans from supply trawlers and arranging with supply trawlers to distribute and load cargo whilst maximising loading speed/ minimising delay.
• Checking empty loading containers are correctly prepared.
• Check and supervise the filling of containers to ensure cargo is loaded correctly and safely.
• Attend client locations to conduct joint quality claims inspections in the event of quality disputes.
• Produce photographic records of products, container condition, loading operations and quality claims.
• Administrative responsibilities, including accurate and timely production of inspection reports and cargo documentation and updating of relevant parties. Chasing relevant paperwork when overdue.

Your experience and profile:

• At least one year working experience in any role (preferably more than one year). Experience within a maritime environment is useful but not essential.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in either shipping, logistics, marine biology, zoology or a closely related course.
• Minimum 2.2 grade in university degree.
• Willingness to do hard work in exchange for reward, "Can do attitude".
• Confident, level headed and fair in challenging situations.
• Thorough, demonstrated track record of doing a comprehensive job in the work undertaken.
• Able to learn and implement processes - for example quality checking processes and loading coordination.
• Able to work abroad for long periods of time. Adventuresome spirit.
• Confident verbal communicator, able to clearly communicate with people from different cultural backgrounds. Intuitive.
• Excellent writing ability, strong attention to detail in writing and excellent reading comprehension.
• Second language is ideal but not essential. Languages of particular interest are Spanish and French.
