Our client is looking for a talented Mechanical Systems Engineer to join there motivated and multi-talented team!

DESCRIPTION

Your position is based in their and will focus on leading the mechanical design and environmental qualification of new fiber-optic modules and sub-systems within the A&D and Health & Life Sciences sectors. You will actively drive new product development and R&D projects and execute our business plan on space photonics and optical coherence tomography. You will work within a multidisciplinary team of engineers to develop cutting-edge and pioneering products for demanding environments.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Generate concept designs by combining electronics, photonics and mechanics
Drive mechanical designs for next-generation photonic systems
Apply concurrent engineering design principles and work within a multi-disciplinary team to ensure compliance to specifications
Develop and execute on test plans for environmental verification of photonic systems in space environment
Coordinate thermo-mechanical testing and interface with test-houses
Communicate findings effectively to fellow team members to allow progression of design projects, developing strong working links with experts across the Gooch & Housego organization
Perform comparative studies between experimental and simulation results, identifying and understanding the source of any deviations.
Contribute to technical product development reviews and produce reports resulting from technical activities
Generate drawings suitable for manufacturing (e.g. BS or NASA standards)
Conduct practical bread-boarding to validate mechanical designs when necessary
Record design development and findings in accordance with ISO9001-compliant procedures
Execute demanding technical projects for delivery on time and under budget
Travel expected to be
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

At least BEng in mechanical engineering
Experience in mechanical design using 3D CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks)
Experience in thermal and stress analysis using FEA software (Solidworks Simulations, COMSOL)
Knowledge on testing and qualification based on standards (e.g. Telcordia, MIL-STD or ESCC / ECSS desirable)
Capability to generate test plans and drive test/qualification campaigns
Good background knowledge of current manufacturing techniques and their capabilities, in order to design manufacturable mechanical parts and assemblies
Capability to interpret simulation results and feedback design changes to the team
Excellent interpersonal skills - both written and verbal
Able to adapt to often rapidly changing design requirements
Well organized, ability to work to deadlines and attention to detail is a must
Good computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
Enthusiasm for solving problems using evidence-based approaches
Willingness to learn
