Job Introduction
The next generation of communication technologies is being developed under the umbrella of '5G'. BBC R&D ( ) is working to influence these developments to ensure that audiences have the best possible access to the BBC's current and future programmes and services.

As a partner in the 5GRuralFirst project (a collaborative project funded under the UK Government's 5G Testbeds and Trials programme), we're working with partners to trial the capabilities of 5G to deliver traditional radio and new forms of BBC audio on the Orkney Islands.

We're looking for someone with strong Android application development skills to build the application that will be deployed to users taking part in the trial as well as someone with an interest in applying their skills on the ground in Orkney to firstly deploy and then assess the performance of the technologies used within the trial.

BBC R&D carries out research and development activities in all the fields of technology that affect the BBC and its public service mission. We aim to ensure that the BBC is properly equipped for the future, either by developing new technologies ourselves, or working to refine them through development and standardisation. We work in small teams of developers, engineers, project managers, research scientists and designers, with a focus on developing strong creative thinkers and leaders, capable of applying their skills to a wide range of problems.

Role Responsibility
The successful candidate will join a team that is working within the 5GRuralFirst project to build and deploy a test 5G network.

The successful candidate will have the ability to develop applications with both an engineering as well as demonstration focus; building applications to measure and report the underlying performance of the system as well as the ability to produce more highly polished user interfaces suitable for use as demonstrators of different aspects of technology within the project.

Essential skills:
  • Proficient in Android application development in Java
  • Experience of building applications using modern frameworks and design patterns
  • Experience of interfacing to web services and RESTful interfaces

Desirable skills:
  • Knowledge and experience of media streaming formats and techniques
  • Knowledge of IP networks and protocols
  • Understanding of mobile technologies including 4G, 4G Broadcast and 5G.
