Job Title: Teacher of Art

Salary/Hours: 2 days per week

38 weeks per year (including 2 weeks non contact).

Annual (FTE) salary of £21,864

Pro-rated at 40% = £8,746

Responsible to: Coordinator, Curriculum leader

Effective Date: 1st September 2018

Role and Context

Job Purpose

The purpose of this role is to teach Art to students with a range of abilities and challenges from year 7 to year 11.

Context

We work with young people who have been severely bullied and/or experience high levels of anxiety about attending school. We provide a safe environment with clear boundaries for behaviour, and an individual full-­time academic, pastoral and therapeutic programme. Once students have regained their confidence and are able to cope academically and socially, we support their return to mainstream school or college or into employment.

It is important that the jobholder concurs with this aim.

Dimensions

Red Balloon – Cambridge offers places to a maximum of 17 students. The teaching and support staff numbers up to 20 full and part-­time staff, and there are usually up to five volunteers working during each week.

Relationships

The Art teacher liaises with the Coordinator and with all staff, students, parents/carers, volunteers and visitors to the Centre. S/he is a participating member of the community.

Other Job Information

Red Balloon and the Trustees will be accountable for all working arrangements and welfare provision.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. As a member of the teaching team:
  2. help design and implement a personal learning programme for each student through negotiation with the student and discussion with colleagues;
  3. offer older students a range of qualifications including Art and Design GCSE.
  4. maintain records of lessons, outcomes and progress for each student;
  5. advise and consult with colleagues, the Coordinators and others, discussing any concerns that arise and acting on any agreed decisions;
  6. contribute to whole staff assessments of students’ social and emotional progress;
  7. give feedback to parents and write achievement records for students as required, and attend parents’ consultations;
  1. As a member of staff:
  2. abide by and support the philosophy of Red Balloon;
  3. cooperate with the other staff in the running of the Centre;
  4. respond to any perceived need for in-­‐service training;
  5. attend staff meetings and INSET when possible.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Degree level education (essential)
  • Experienced teacher/tutor (essential)
  • Art studied to A level at least (or equivalent) – (essential)
  • Qualified Teacher Status (desirable)

Skills/Knowledge

  • Current, or recent, experience of working with students (KS1/2 desirable), including National Curriculum.
  • Experience of teaching students with a wide range of abilities, challenges and interests using a variety of teaching styles. (essential)
  • Confidence and creativity to build upon students’ interests and ideas within a negotiated curriculum. (essential)
  • Ability to teach on a one-­‐to-­‐one basis and in small groups (essential).
  • Appreciation of therapeutic properties of creative subjects, with specific reference to art (essential)
  • Strong subject knowledge. (essential)
  • IT skills for teaching and record keeping. (essential)
  • Understanding of the impact of emotional well-­‐being upon a student’s ability to learn and vice versa. (essential)
