Job Title: Curator (Industry & Transport)
Salary: circa GBP25,000.00 Per Annum Pro Rata
Location: Dudley
Job Type: Job Share, Permanent, 3 days per week (22.5 hours)
The Black Country Living Museum (BCLM) welcomes over 300,000 visitors per year to explore and discover 300 years of Black Country history. Its designated collections of around 61,000 objects constitute a comprehensive record of industrial activity and society in the Black Country.
BCLM: Forging Ahead is the Museum's GBP22m project to create a world class heritage attraction at the heart of the Black Country, telling a unique story of worldwide significance to 500,000 people each year. It will expand and significantly improve the visitor experience, growing the historic site by a third and creating a new historic development set in the 1940s-60s. This will be complemented by a new contemporary Visitor Centre able to efficiently cater for up to 5,000 visitors per day.
Curator (Industry & Transport) - You:
BCLM is looking to recruit a highly motivated individual to curate our designated industry and transport collections.
You will have a background in an established museum or heritage environment. You will be instrumental in enhancing and developing our visitor experience as well as maintaining optimum curatorial standards in collections management and care. You should have a strong background in industrial history or collections.
Curator (Industry & Transport) - The Role:
- This is a job share position, you will be working closely with another Curator for Industry & Transport
- To assist with developing, researching and implementing innovative programmes and projects that make the best use of the Museum's designated industry and transport collections, to tell the story of Black Country history to enhance visitor experiences and grow audiences, as part of an integrated programme of wider engagement with visitors and public.
- To assist with the management of volunteers, with particular responsibility for certain special-interest volunteer groups
- To implement optimum standards in collections management and care of operational collections
- To undertake academic research to inform the development of programmes and projects
- To direct engineering works to benefit the care, maintenance and operation of the industry and transport collection
- To implement optimum standards in the care of collections, including participation in the programme of housekeeping, environmental monitoring, pest monitoring and other preventative conservation
- To contribute to the development of the Museum's collecting policy to inform future collecting, acquisitions and development of the industry and transport features of the Museum
- To identify, source and research potential new acquisitions to the industry and transport collection
- To contribute to the development and delivery of Learning Programmes
- To assist with the training of Learning Assistants, Demonstrators and volunteers, in their knowledge and use of the Museum's industry and transport collections
- To assist with identifying and developing local, regional and national partnerships
Curator (Industry & Transport) - Essential:
- Extensive experience in a similar role, in a museum or heritage environment, coupled with a demonstrable interest in and knowledge of industrial and transport history including coal mining, iron and brass working, steam engines, canal boats, buses and trams, motor cars and motor cycles
- Experience of managing and working with volunteers, demonstrating accomplished team-working skills
- Project management experience
- Ability to and experience of juggling multiple priorities and working to deadlines.
- Relevant degree
- Experience of collections documentation to SPECTRUM standards and of latest collections management systems
- Accomplished communication (written & spoken), advocacy and networking skills
- An aptitude for mechanical engineering and practical experience of operating working exhibits
