Attracting great engineering design talent is crucial to maintaining Rugged Interactive’s position as the leader in interactive fitness technology; in fact innovative design is at the very core of our business.
This is a pivotal position within our organisation as it develops, refines and improves the core components of our products, through new product development and programme upgrades to existing products; it involves interaction with every department. This introduces a new skillset and capability for our organisation, by bringing it in house rather than buying in subcontracted services.
The role requires the engineer to work at a quick pace, as a creative programmer and make intelligent design decisions in relation to the Rugged brand as well as manufacturing costs and feasibility. Good project management skills are required, as is the ability to support the wider team whilst being able to work successfully with minimal supervision, knowing when to ask the right questions.
About You

You’ll be a confident communicator and have a forensic eye for detail, accuracy and following through. You’ll have excellent organisational skills, and experience of working with manufacturers is crucial, as is a solid knowledge of good practice both with coding and electronic design.
You’ll be creatively and technically adaptable with a strong background in taking a hands-on approach to managing multiple, varied and sometimes complex projects, working across departments and liaising at times with end customers.
You’ll need to have a level of spontaneity and be flexible to some extent occasionally when needing to attend other sites.
Responsibilities include:
- Conceptual planning and design of products along with the design team
- Creation of circuit diagrams
- Use / creation of simulation designs for analysis
- Co-ordination with circuit layout specialists and manufacturers
- Creation of UI graphic front displays alongside graphics team
- Development of algorithms for data sharing and performance tracking
- Selection of appropriate components for designs
- Analysis of existing code and maintenance of same

- Testing of products and code to agreed specification
- Assist production team to develop testing schedule
- Working with consultants and third party contractors
- Contributing to product development from initial idea generation through to prototyping, product assembly and testing.
- Contributing to product training and product repair; all roles are involved in this to continually improve our products.
You’ll Need:
- A degree level or equivalent level qualification, possibly but not necessarily in Electronics Engineering and / or software engineering.
- A portfolio of previous work, projects and accomplishments which you’ll be asked to showcase as part of the shortlisting and interviewing process.
- A strong design awareness.
- Hands on knowledge of practical electronics and coding.

- A great attitude; positive and enthusiastic
- 3 Referees who can vouch for you
- An understanding of Real-Time Embedded Systems Engineering
- Knowledge of Real-Time PIC24 C programming – event driven, interrupts, state-machines
- Familiarity with PIC 24 re-assignable pin peripheral architecture
- Experience of an Agile, fast-paced results driven environment
- Exposure to programming in Javascript and PHP.
- Working with proprietary communications architectures and protocols
