The Materials Science Function is a global team supporting GSK's manufacturing sites with projects aligned to materials changes, technology transfers and rapid resolution of business-critical supply issues related to materials science.

Job Purpose:
Reporting into the Materials Science Head, you will lead a team (4 people) to provide expertise and a range of materials science services to the General Manufacturing and Supply sites on business prioritised projects. The team provide diverse services, including technical leadership, expert consultation, provision of measurement or process data (including interpretation and reporting), and the provision of expert training. You will manage and develop your team (of Material Scientists) as they support GSK's manufacturing sites for business-critical projects related to security of supply, new business, and major COG (Cost of Good) programmes.

The range of products that your team provides expert support on includes liquids, creams, ointments, semi-solid and solid dose forms (tablets/capsules). You will be responsible for technical approval of work completed, as well as the approval of regulatory submissions and responses to regulatory questions. Throughout you will ensure the appropriate EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards are maintained with respect to laboratory and equipment. A key element of the role is to provide leadership and training for the Material Risk Assessment (MRA) process for material changes.

Your expertise may be called upon to provide recommendations regarding operation, selection or design of processing equipment, and you may be involved with developing and transferring measurement methods. You will be expected to matrix-lead global multi-disciplinary teams aligned to technical projects.

You will assist the Materials Science Head to develop and implement the Materials Science strategy. You may also represent the function on global Wider Assessment Panels (WAP) for changes to parts of the manufacturing function, including OSD (Oral & Solid Dose), LCO (Liquids, Creams and Ointments), Respiratory, API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients) and Consumer Healthcare.

You will ensure that appropriate Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and compliance with EHS regulations are maintained. You will maintain effective working relationships with customers and suppliers, and actively contribute to improvement initiatives.

About You:
The role would suit a highly motivated individual with a strong materials science background. You will be degree-qualified with an excellent level of technical knowledge and understanding of materials science (eg; powder/particle technology and colloid science). You will have strong people skills and a proven ability to work in a team (flexible approach, good communication and organizational skills), as well as report writing skills. You will have a continuous improvement mindset, and a willingness to work towards standardised and lean working practices.

Why You?Basic qualifications:
• Degree related to Materials Science.
• Experience in leading a team of materials scientists
• Leadership and delivery of materials science activities on business-critical projects (related to powder and colloidal dose forms).
• Leadership and training competency in risk assessments (related to material change programs). Must be L1 Material Risk Assessment approved and working towards L2 MRA accreditation.
• Demonstrable experience of solving complex problems in colloidal and solid dose forms using materials science mechanism maps.
• Experience in measurement systems aligned to LCO (Liquids, Creams and Ointments) dose forms (eg; rheology, microscopy, lumiszier).
• Experience in measurement systems aligned to solid dose forms (eg; particle sizing, powder flow).

Preferred qualifications:
• In addition to 1st degree, post degree qualifications related to complex data analysis or LCO (Liquids, Creams and Ointments)/OSD (Oral & Solid Dose) dose Forms.
• Significant experience of leading a materials science group
• Proven track record of developing state of the art material characterization capability
• Ability to analyse complex materials science data sets e.g. statistical approaches
