1625 Independent People prevents youth homelessness in the South West and has been helping 16-25 year olds reboot their lives for over 30 years.

With around 100 employees in six locations, we provided housing and support to around 2500 young people last year.

About the job

Terms, conditions and benefits:

• Hours per week : 26.25 (3.5 days)
• Contract type: Temporary 18 months in the first instance
• Pay: £21,693 – £23,866 per year (NJC Scale 23-26 ), (pro rata for part time) starting at the bottom of the scale

The role

The Participation and Learning Team have a wide remit within 1625ip:
• we look after service user involvement such as our Youth Board, Peer Education and Peer Support
• we run an extensive informal engagement and learning programme to develop confidence and independent living skills with young people,
• we offer specialist education, employment and training advice and support
• we run a wide range of volunteering programmes including mentoring schemes.

The team are dynamic and creative and always looking for new ways to support young people’s personal development.

This is an exciting new role within our team and will suit someone keen to make their mark and develop something brand new.

The work will be linked to our successful Community Mentoring programme  but the focus of this work will be on supporting young people who are ready to move into employment/training. You will train and support mentors from local businesses who will then help young people access specific opportunities, maybe within their own workplaces.

Our work is rooted in providing support in a Psychologically Informed environment framework known as PIE. The team are very supportive of each other and through reflective practice we are always learning from our own and each other’s experiences.

A typical day will include
1 Training potential mentors from local businesses and organisations
2 Pairing mentors with young people keen to access employment and training opportunities
3 Providing telephone and/or face to face advice for mentors paired with a young person to support ongoing relationships
4. Monitoring and recording the progress of young people

About you

You have empathy and understanding of the needs of homeless young people, young people leaving care, and the barriers they face. You like being around and working with young people.

You are able to motivate and inspire young people and potential mentors and are able to facilitate successful matches. Working with our EET workers and a Business Broker you will help support suitable work experience / training opportunities for young people taking into account their interests and support needs.

You have good organisational skills enabling you to track and monitor the progress of young people. You are confident in developing and delivering good quality mentor training.   

Ideally you have experience of working with young people, particularly young people that may lack confidence and employability skills. Previous experience of engaging with employers to set up work placements and training opportunities would be beneficial.

• There is a requirement to work flexibly as required, which may include occasional evening and weekend work.
• You will need to travel across Bristol so you must have either a full driving licence and access to a vehicle or the equivalent ability to travel with reasonable adjustments

You will be working in the Participation and Learning Team and you will be line managed by the Volunteer Coordinator.
