Trade Union Employment Representative Trade Union Caseworker

An ideal opportunity has arisen for an experienced employment caseworker to join this not for profit trade union for education, early years & childcare professionals on a part-time hour basis; 3 days per week (21 hours).

This is a development role with potential to progress into policy work and more senior role, as skills develop and opportunities arise.

Annual salary commencing £27,892 p., with potential annual increments up to £32,749 p., based on a 35-hour week. The pro-rata salary commences at £16,735 p. Varied additional benefits including contributory pension scheme and health care cash plan (paid for by the organisation).

This role is based working from our Edinburgh Office, however to be fully effective in this role it is important that the successful candidate is willing and able to travel around Scotland to support our members locally.

This role is to -
- undertake casework; advising and supporting members on employment issues in Scotland
- represent the company at consultation/negotiation meetings with local, regional or national bodies or organisations.
- provide support to activists within the region, to recruit new volunteers to train as Field Officers etc.
- actively seek opportunities to recruit new members. Participation in recruitment events and NQT meetings.
- organise meetings of members/non-members on specific issues of concern

The successful applicant will possess -
- Experience of acting as a workplace trade union representative
- Good knowledge of UK employment legislation
- Confidence to represent members in challenging situations
- Good communication skills, both oral and written
- Effective listening skills and good interpersonal skills to build and develop networks
- Good IT skills
- Ability to travel within Scotland and work flexibly with some unsocial hours
- Advocacy skills and experience in the employment sector

The successful candidate will also ideally possess -
- Trade Union or membership focused environment experience
- Current knowledge of education issues
- Educated to degree level or equivalent
- Experience of working in and understanding the management context of nurseries, schools or colleges, etc.
- Driving licence
