Job Specification for RF Engineer 2018
Role overview:
A position is available within an electronics design and manufacturing
centre based in Herne bay in Kent. As part of a 15 man
multi-disciplined engineering team the role will be responsible for RF
design, modelling and verification of RF linked products designed for
use in the Fire and Security industry. The successful candidate will
be part of a dedicated project team assigned to the development of a
family of products. The products under development are subject to a
framework of European harmonised regulatory standards.
Skills and experience that would help with this role:
* A suitable university degree and at least 2 years experience in RF
design.
* Alternatively at least 5 years experience of RF design in sub-GHz
band without an equivalent qualification.
* Strong knowledge of different radio systems and radio
communication protocols (proprietary and non-proprietary).
* Strong knowledge of modulation scheme options and strengths and
weaknesses in their use.
* Experience working with short range devices (SRDs).
* Good understanding of antenna types and integration into bespoke
design solutions.
* PCB antenna design in complex and physically small products where
PCB size is typically lower than a wavelength.
* Experience with filter and transceiver matching.
* Experienced with RF testing equipment including spectrum
analyzers, signal generators and VNAs (Network analyzers) to 6GHz.
* Experience with FSK modulated multiple device systems,
point-multipoint.
* Experience with anechoic test chambers and shielded rooms found in
a typical RF laboratory environment.
* Designing to European product standards/directives.
* Understanding and experience working with the radio equipment
directive (RED).
* Knowledge of EN300220 testing techniques including sensitivity
measurements and ERP.
* Knowledge of UK and European band usage regulations.
* Sound knowledge of EMC test requirements and processes.
* Experience with non-propritary technologies such as Bluetooth,
wifi, Zigbee and IoT technologies etc.
* Good knowledge of good practice PCB layout and electrical circuit
design for RF circuits.
* A good understanding of digital hardware design.
* Design of low current battery powered RF designs/products.
* Typical transceiver families used:
* Semtech SX12xx series
* Texas Instruments CC11xx series
* AXSEM 50xx series
* Experience with ANSYS HFSS or equivalent model based design tools.
* Comfortable working with basic scripting for test automation and
chipset configuration.
* Demonstration of commitment to continuing professional
development.
* Ability to accurately estimate timescales and regularly report
progress to project team leaders.
* Good design practice and report writing skills.
* Able to work independently and interface with external test
laboratories and outside business units as required by the role
