Job Brief

The Project Manager will be part of the Royal Mail Parcels technology team, delivering customer focussed solutions that provide Royal Mail with competitive advantage in this strategic area of the organisation. The Project Manager will have end to end accountability for project delivery. The role will manage the project delivery process; work with the commercial project leads to establish a valid business case; negotiate supplier agreements; build an appropriate project team with the necessary resources and skills; and ensure the project delivers as planned within the agreed parameters of cost, timescales and quality.

Profile

The successful candidate MUST be able to demonstrate proven capabilities in:

  • Managing the end-to-end project delivery with a strong focus on compliance to defined governance processes through the project lifecycle stages
  • Managing third party delivery suppliers. The candidate must be able to demonstrate their ability in reviewing, negotiating and agreeing a statement of work with suppliers
  • Assisting in the generation of a business case that encompasses all necessary costs and resources to successfully deliver the project
  • Project management tools and methodologies, such as Prince 2, PMI, Agile and Microsoft Project
  • Leading small to medium size teams of up to ten people
  • Leading multiple projects concurrently with a budget of up to approximately GBP3m
  • Stakeholder management and experience in running successful workshops
  • Interpersonal and communication skills with internal and third party staff, senior level executives and the wider Technology organisation
  • Creative thinking and seeking innovative solutions to complex technical/business problems

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Project Manager will perform a wide range of duties including:

Plan the project

  • In partnership with the commercial team and other members of the technology team, define the scope of the project
  • Create a detailed project plan which identifies and sequences the activities needed to successfully complete the project
  • Determine the necessary resources required to complete the project
  • Agree a statement of work with third party suppliers to provide accurate costs to deliver the project
  • Agree the key objectives and measures upon which the project will be evaluated at its completion
  • Contribute to the business case to ensure that it accurately reflects the necessary time and cost needed to deliver the project

Implement the project

  • Execute the project according to the project plan
  • Manage suppliers and project team to deliver the project within the business case, to the required time, cost and quality
  • Monitor the progress of the project and make adjustments as necessary to ensure the successful completion of the project
  • Review the quality of the work completed with the third party suppliers on a regular basis to ensure that it meets the project standards
  • Execute the project management process to ensure delivery, in line with Royal Mail policies and methods including project control, risk management, change management, issue resolution, progress reporting, project documentation and quality reviews
  • Deliver clear precise communication to update stakeholders on the progress of the project; effective escalation of risks and issue when required
  • Full compliance with any applicable Royal Mail governance processes ensuring the Royal Mail gating community are kept fully aware of project progress
  • Monitor and approve all budgeted project expenditures

Evaluate the project

  • Ensure that the project deliverables are on time, within budget and at the required level of quality
  • Evaluate the outcomes of the project as established during the planning phase

Reports to: Programme Manager

Location: Based in London with some potential travel between Royal Mail sites as required
