Position: Network Designer
Location: Greater Manchester

As the Lead Network Design Engineer, you will collaborate closely with the Network & Infrastructure Technical Architect and other Designers to ensure that our network achieves the desired levels of security, availability and performance. You will also contribute to the definition and planning of the Network & Infrastructure programme of work, ensuring that the scope and requirements of our key projects are clear and achievable.
You will also be hands-on and have a strong and varied engineering background in the ISP or Telecoms industry. You will lead and take part in projects, working with other engineers to produce and implement designs, build plans, test plans, transition plans and documentation. In carrying out these activities you be a role model both within this team and across the department and will use your insight and knowledge to aid in the development of the skills and practices of our Engineering team.
You’ll also provide a technical escalation to the 3rd line engineers, and work out of hours where necessary to deliver infrastructure changes.

Copper and Fibre Broadband, LLU
Ethernet, VPN, QoS, VOIP and SIP
Core IP, transit and peering, distribution, access, datacentre and enterprise networks
Juniper, Ericsson, Huawei, Cisco
Objectives:
Provide technical leadership to our Engineering team, ensuring they develop the skills and best practices for designing, building and verifying robust, scalable network services.
Ensure our core and enterprise networks are designed and built to achieve required levels of security, availability and performance – now and in the future.
Lead and participate in projects to design and deliver changes to our core and enterprise network in a safe and timely manner.
Encourage and support input from our Engineering team, acting as a role model, identifying development opportunities and providing coaching.
Define security and technical standards, and provide guidance and oversight to Engineers and Designers to ensure our best practices are upheld.
Support our stakeholders in developing and achieving product strategies, acting as an ambassador for the Engineering team and the Network and Infrastructure department.
Responsibilities:
Works with the Engineering team to make collaborative decisions on vendors and technologies.
Recommends and seeks business support for technology selections.
Co-ordinate and collaborate with the Engineering team to plan and estimate projects.
Set and communicate security and technical standards to our Engineering team, monitoring and supporting their application.
Work with team manager to identify development needs and opportunities of design engineers.
Lead by example in both behaviour and working practices to ensure the effectiveness of the whole team develops and continually improves.
Brings technical excellence into the team and ensures best practice is applied design, testing, documentation and change management.
Share insight and knowledge with stakeholders to help build a vision and strategy for our products and services.
Co-ordinate with stakeholders to help build strong relationships with customers, partners and vendors.
Skills - Essential:
Subject matter expert within the networking field but has broad understanding in other technical areas sufficient to contribute to broader more strategic discussions
Successful track record in working within a design or engineering team in an ISP, Telco or other technical services environment.
Experienced in leading and overseeing the technical design process
Excellent consultancy skills
