We have a fantastic Post Doctoral Fellowship in AI (Artificial Intelligence) opportunity, to join our team based in Wilmslow on a full time, 2 year fixed term basis. You will receive a salary £42,509 per annum (pay review pending) plus pension and excellent benefits.

As an independent regulator serving the public, the Information Commissioner upholds information rights for all. The ICO does this by promoting openness in public bodies, as well as data privacy for individuals, using our powers to enforce the law where necessary.

The ICO’s Technology Policy Department is a centre of technical expertise, responsible for monitoring and evaluating current and emerging technologies, assessing their impact on information rights and developing the ICO’s response.

The team exists as a point of reference for expert advice on a wide range of technology matters relevant to information rights. We develop technology-focussed advice and guidance for both UK organisations and citizens. Working with colleagues from across the ICO, the department plays a vital role in the development of a technical underpinning to the ICO’s regulatory activities.

About the Post Doctoral Fellowship in AI (Artificial Intelligence)

The primary goal of this post is to research and investigate a framework for auditing algorithms in Artificial Intelligence (AI). The framework is to be used as a tool by the ICO to ensure AI is used within the bounds of GDPR, data privacy by design and generally AI innovations and benefits specifically processing data fairly and transparently.

Post Doctoral Fellowship in AI (Artificial Intelligence) responsibilities:
 

- Provide key expertise on AI so that we are able to understand the internal processes of AI systems
- Study ways to make interpretable the reasons for an AI’s predictions or decisions

- Using your own initiative and knowledge through discussion with the Head of Technology Policy, develop a framework for AI algorithm auditing, to be published as papers in leading academic journals

- Pro-actively research, monitor and investigate emerging AI, Machine Learning and Big data technologies, assessing their potential impact on information rights and contributing to an ICO response

- Provide in-house expertise on AI developments and establish effective liaison between the ICO and relevant stakeholders at a technical level

- Representing the ICO in situations where technical AI knowledge and understanding is required, e.g. meeting representative bodies and information rights interest groups, speaking at conferences, etc.

- Identify new areas for research and extend the research portfolio where appropriate, as well as plan and manage small-scale research activities using resources, labs, studios, maker spaces and workshops as appropriate.

Our ideal Post Doctoral Fellowship in AI (Artificial Intelligence) candidate will have:

- A relevant Phd/evidence of relevant research activity, including publications, is essential

- Up to date, expert knowledge of current trends and practices relating to the use AI

- Excellent analytical and research skills demonstrating an ability to identify emerging AI issues and technologies

- Experience of writing up research for publication, for conference and peer reviewed journals

- Competency to conduct individual and collaborative research projects

- Willingness to participate with multidisciplinary teams are also pre-requisites
