1625 Independent People prevents youth homelessness in the South West and has been helping 16-25 year olds reboot their lives for over 30 years. With around 100 staff in four locations, we provided housing and support to around 2500 young people last year.

• Full and Part Time Vacancies
• Annualised hours (Full time 2080 hours, part time 1040 per annum)
• Weekly working hours: Full time 40, part time 20 hours (including lunch breaks).
• Permanent.
• Pay: £17,419 to £18,746 per year (NJC Scale 16 - 19) starting at the bottom of the scale (pro rata for part time)
• 240 hours annual leave plus Bank Holidays equating to 8 hours per bank holiday for FTE (pro rata for part time)
• Free Health Scheme with UK Healthcare. 
• Pension - Employer contributes 4% and employees contribute a minimum of 0.8%, (see Summary of T&Cs below).

The role

You will be joining our highly motivated and skilled High Support Team who collectively provide supported accommodation for homeless young people (including care leavers) within our two higher support hostels, located in central Bristol. You will join them in providing support and practical help to enable our young people to develop their independent living skills and in ensuring the health, safety and security of the residents, staff, visitors and the projects.

No two nights are the same, and during the night you will be completing a number of tasks alongside supporting young people and meeting their needs. This can include coordinating emergency accommodation referrals, cleaning and clearing of void rooms, regular building checks, reporting maintenance issues, safeguarding and liaison with statutory services, and managing the challenging behaviours displayed by the young people.

You might also support young people to understand their rights and responsibilities of the accommodation agreement and help with the collection of accommodation charges.

You will play a vital role in providing a listening ear to young people whether that is catching up with them or helping them resolve a problem.

The team are very supportive of each other and through reflective practice we are always learning from our own and each other’s experiences. Our work is rooted in providing support in a Psychologically Informed Environment framework known as PIE.

About you

You have empathy and understanding of the needs of homeless young people, young people leaving care, and the barriers they face. You like being around and working with young people.

You have a real interest in helping young people develop their confidence and independent living skills.  You are able to be flexible and to react appropriately to a wide range of scenarios.

You can maintain professional boundaries with young people at all times, are able to communicate well and can use IT to at least a basic level.

You do not necessarily need experience of working directly with young people or within a hostel setting – an understanding of young people’s needs is more important, as is a positive, can do attitude.

Everything else we can teach you and we will provide a comprehensive induction into the role and the service, with ongoing training.
