The statutory attendance team processes all requests for statutory action from schools and are fully committed to improve school attendance across the city. Requests are for penalty notices, court cases and school attendance orders. The team also supports a wide range of stakeholders work with vulnerable pupils where attendance is a concern. Some of these include other service areas within the city council, early help teams, GMP, city solicitors and social care. In addition to this the team also provide support to schools on attendance initiatives and training requirements. The team delivers regular network meetings to schools and attendance conferences on an annual basis.  

This role requires the candidate to work as part of a team in the Statutory School Attendance team. Supporting schools in improving school attendance is a key element of this role. Schools request the Local Authority to issue a range of statutory action when a pupil’s attendance at school has become irregular or in cases classed as persistent absence. You will be required to have a good understanding of attendance related issues and legislation that supports improving school attendance at school. 

A major part of this role will be issuing formal cautions for irregular attendance and also to minute formal interviews with parents. In addition to specified workloads you will also be required to support other members of the team during peaks in requests throughout the year and support the attendance team in all aspects of attendance procedures/processes. You will be based in the town hall but may also be require to conduct home visits as part of investigating cases.

The role will require you to manage and process large volumes of work on a daily basis that need processing in a timely manner. Meeting tight deadlines and working in a challenging environment whilst still maintaining a highly professional approach is key to this role. You will need to have excellent organisational and time management skills and be able work on your own initiative.

You will need to be competent and confident in using a range of IT packages such as excel, word, power point and through training utilise in house data systems used to record pupils details.

You will be required to attend ongoing training and also support training events delivered to schools. Due to the nature of the work the candidate may also be require to attend court as a witness.
