Geoscience Data Technician
Reporting To: Head of Data and Visualisation Team
Department: Support
Post Responsibilities:
Working within the Data and Visualisation Team to support GIS and Data Services across the business providing expertise and technical support in data management primarily at a project level.
The role will focus on three areas:
- supporting the data management and GIS requirements of projects;
- assisting in the development of protocols for data management, and;
- assisting in the development of data management services for external clients.
Main Duties:
The main duties of the role comprise:
- Supporting the data management needs of projects, particularly those involving large and/or multi-disciplinary datasets
- GIS development support
- Development of generic and project specific databases to support efficient data handling of information within projects
- Assisting with the development of tools, procedures, guides, manuals to support internal generic database systems for projects
- Development of systems and procedures for efficient capturing and data handling of site data and transfer to project data systems
- Processing and manipulation of geoscientific and other data
SPECIALIST SKILLS:
Essential:
- Knowledge of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and GIS development and integration environments particularly ArcGIS and ESRI products
- Knowledge and some experience in databases and database design and field data capture
- Have knowledge and experience in programming e.g. python, vba
- Good working knowledge of MS Excel and MS Access advantageous
- Qualifications relating to geosciences and/or computing
- Ability to deliver high quality work under pressure and to tight deadlines
- Excellent communication skills
- Excellent organisational skills with good attention to detail
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Ability to rapidly learn new software as required
- Ability to work without direct supervision and to prioritise workload effectively
- Willingness to proactively engage with consultants/clients to maintain and improve the quality of output
- Proven problem-solving skills
Desirable:
- Knowledgeable and experienced in environmental and geoscience disciplines including; environmental monitoring, (environmental) geochemistry, hydrology and hydrogeology, geology.
- Experience of graphics and visual representation with an ability to present data and information effectively
- Knowledge of MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL or similar server based systems
Location:
Cardiff office.
Commencing Salary:
- Salary Range £negotiable.
Hours of Work:
The normal working week is 40 hours, Monday to Friday 09:00 to 17:30 with half hour lunch. However, there will be the need for working flexible hours to meet deadlines. Overtime is not payable.
Holidays:
- 29 working days per annum inclusive of bank and public holidays. Leave increases with length of service.
