Bristol is an exciting multi-cultural City to work in sat at the heart of the West of England and gateway to the South West and Wales. Transport is key to future success of Bristol, and the wider West of England Combined Area, and this is an exciting time to be working for Bristol City Council as we consider how to deliver new challenges, such as Metro and Arena, whilst delivering our normal Transport functions of maintenance, road safety and legal duties against a challenging financial picture.

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates willing to learn on the job, take responsibility and meet the challenges for each of the work areas detailed above, which could cover, but not be limited to, the following;

Strategy and Policy – Identifying major transport projects to be delivered in Bristol, creating and consulting on transport policy, bidding for new funding from regional, national and international sources to planning major strategic transport projects;

Flood Risk Management – Tidal surge along the River Avon to being one of the top ten cities in the country at risk from surface water flooding;

Transport Capital Programme - provide support to project and programme managers including monitoring of the Transport Capital programme through the Transport Delivery Board.  The Transport Delivery Board is a new programme management board whose aim is to improve the delivery of the Transport Capital programme, reporting and scrutiny.

For each of the different roles we are seeking to fill we have produced a Job Profile which explains in more detail what each of those roles will encompass and what candidates can expect to be doing on a day to day basis.

However in general terms a Professional and Technical Officer could be expected to undertake the following duties;

  • Producing managerial and technical data information (e.g. internet searches, collation of statistics and reports, manipulation of spreadsheets and databases) and prepare more specialist technical drafts;
  • Production of maps, models, graphics, drawings, and diagrams to ensure that projects are fully supported;
  • Undertake technical work with minimum supervision including secure handling of confidential data and information to comply with Council policy and with the Data Protection Act;
  • Assist in the day-to-day delivery of front line customer services to colleagues, Council teams, the Public, Elected Members, Business and Government Bodies.
