School Groundsman

Job Purpose

Manage Grounds and Gardens.
To deputise as required.
Liaise and Communicate with the Bursar to ensure all requirements for the Grounds and Gardens of the school are met in a timely manner and presented to a high quality.
To maintain all games and sports areas to a very high standard.
To enhance the high quality of the grounds.
To provide a high quality responsive grounds maintenance service across all areas of the school.
Ensure that all Health & Safety legislation and Codes of Practise are followed at all times

Key Responsibilities
This section is a guide to the nature and principal duties of the job as they currently exist and is not intended as a comprehensive list.
Supervision
Responsibility for team supervision on a day-to-day basis, including mentoring and development; return to work interviews; appraisals etc.
Grounds
To work under the direction of the Bursar to provide an efficient grounds' maintenance service to the school.
Maintain the playing fields and artificial Turf pitch (principal sports played are football, hockey, athletics and cricket).
Maintain the playing surfaces in a suitable condition for the particular sport in season at that time (including setting out and marking pitches).
At the end of each season erecting and dismantling relevant goals etc.
To undertake routine grounds' maintenance work to playing surfaces and landscapes detailed on work schedules.
To assist in the creation, marking out and setting up of playing surfaces.
Keep daily computerised records of work programmes/scheduling.
Gardens
To undertake maintenance of the gardens when resources dictate, as directed by the
Bursar, including duties such as lawn moving, tending to borders, hedges, trees and leaves, leaf raking and litter picking.
To produce and oversee a quality finish in all areas of work.
To plant and maintain a wide variety of plats and shrubs in many varying locations around the School.
Maintenance of boundary fences, hedges, ditches, verges, car parks and paths.
Care and maintenance of trees on site to include low level pruning, clearance and replanting.
Maintain the gardens as instructed, including the flower beds, hanging baskets, tubs and pots, summer and winter bedding plants, wildlife area and mow and strim grass areas.
General
Ensure that all plant and machinery is properly maintained and is kept in good working order. Inspect and record the condition and state of all departmental vehicles weekly ensuring all vehicles are washed off on completion of the working week.
Providing appropriate qualifications are in place, ensure the safe use, storage, calibration and disposal of pesticides and other similar substances. Training will be given.
The ability to remain calm in a busy and demanding environment, excellent communication skills, strong leadership skills and a flexible attitude to working hours.
Conduct and maintain a stock record for all departmental materials and chemicals.
Meeting all pastoral needs with weekly meetings.
Maintain a daily log of work activities carried out of the school calendar year.
To be responsible for your own personal health and safety and to report any accidents or other aspects of safety to the Facilities Manager.
To monitor and report any security issues relating to grounds to the Bursar.
To drive the school vehicles safely and responsibly when required (if appropriately licensed).
To help the Estates Team in snow clearing as needed.
Maintain and clean machinery.

Person specification:
Training
You may, from time to time, be required to undergo training relevant to the responsibilities above or related functions. Such training may be residential. The cost of this training, and reasonable expenses (which must be approved in advance by the Bursar and fully supported by vouchers/receipts) will be borne by the College.
HEALTH AND SAFETY:
You are required to operate safe working methods and observe statutory regulations, codes of practice, maintenance of machinery and plant and all matters relating to Health & Safety at Work Act and in accordance with the School's Health & Safety Policy.

SECURITY:
In terms of Security, you will be responsible for:
Reporting suspicious circumstances to the College, the local Police & Grounds &Building Maintenance Manager and Bursar.
Ensuring that all access points/doors to areas in which you are working are locked at all times.
Maintaining a high level of general security awareness.

Personal Competencies and Qualities
Supervision qualification or equivalent experience
Valid driving licence (essential)
Experience of operation of all grounds maintenance machinery including strimmer's, hedge cutters, mowers, tractors
An appropriate grounds or gardening qualification, such as sports turf maintenance
and/or sports turf maintenance, RHS General Certificate in Horticulture (or similar) is desirable
PA1 & PA6 Spraying qualification
CS30 & 31 Chainsaw qualification
Good horticultural knowledge
I.T. Skills and the ability to write reports
Ability to work outdoors all year round in all weather conditions
Practical, can do attitude
Able to find solutions to problems faced
Be willing to assist with a variety of different tasks and adapt to change
Well organised with excellent time management skills
Willingness to undertake further training and learn new skills
Able to prioritise tasks
Attention to detail
Self-motivated
