Job Introduction

Reach plc is seeking to recruit a trainee reporter to join the fantastic team at the Leicester Mercury's office in Leicester city centre. This role requires an ambitious and aspiring reporter, who will work on a news rota to generate story ideas and create and curate multimedia content that works brilliantly across all of our platforms. With digital content at the forefront, you will use channels such as social media to get our stories to as many people as possible and help to increase our audience reach.

Insight into the role:

The Leicester Mercury's newsroom is fast-paced and busy. This role requires focus on the audience, willingness to learn, and a flexible approach. We want everyone to be passionate about growing and engaging with our audience, to be ambitious for the website, themselves and their colleagues. This will be reflected in close working with commercial colleagues and involvement in joint projects.

Every writer will be expected to turn a passion into a patch -which will be slanted towards business content and agreed with the content desk to achieve the greatest potential.

They are expected to develop and nurture an audience of scale around this patch, and create content that drives improving levels of engagement. All content must comply with relevant media law and IPSO regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Be able to demonstrate experience of creating compelling and targeted content that drives outstanding digital engagement and plays a full part in growing our audiences online and in print
  • Have knowledge of social media and searching tools (i. Tweetdeck, Geofeedia etc) in addition to having used traditional journalistic methods to dig out stories
  • Have video and live blogging skills, knowledge of best practice for live coverage, and a good understanding and proven track record of what makes a live blog stand out
  • Demonstrate a variety of ways to tell stories and a portfolio that contains examples of different methods of digital storytelling
  • Take responsibility for themes of content, such as geographic areas, campaigns or other areas of interest, as agreed with the content desk
  • Possess excellent communication skills and be adept at imparting information clearly and concisely, over any medium
  • Have the ability to work with minimal supervision

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for candidates who are passionate about developing creative and inspiring content to attract and engage our large and knowledgeable print and digital audiences. We want you to bring fresh and creative ideas and be passionate and enthusiastic in your approach. Suitable candidates will acknowledge that this is not a 9-5 role and will be able and willing to work flexibly over evenings/weekends as and when required. Ideally you will hold a NCTJ Journalism pre-entry qualification (or equivalent).
