About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Chemist to join us in our UKAS accredited Laboratory.

You will spend the majority of your time in the lab performing analytical procedures in order to provide accurate and reliable test results to clients in accordance with written and verbal instructions and with due regard to Health, Safety and Quality standards and the principles of GCLP.

You will be required to regularly communicate and interact with other Analysts, Team Leaders and the Lab Manager on daily basis and will also be involved in training other analysts with testing equipment and procedures. You will be adaptable and have a natural ability to identify problems and generate solutions where appropriate. You may also be required to assist with lab process improvement exercises to improve process flows and working practices, under the guidance of the Team Leader.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • To comply with all required Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental policies and procedures.
  • To perform basic analytical procedures accurately and efficiently in accordance with written and verbal instructions and the requirements of the quality system (UKAS or customer specific) and within the principles of good laboratory practice. 
  • To analyse samples using analytical instruments which may include the following tests; ICP, Titrations, FTIR, Viscosity and Particle Contamination.            
  • To analyse samples to specification, for example fuels, heat transfers, insulating and turbine.
  • To produce and record accurate test results on the correct documentation - both in paper and electronic format (using LIMS).
  • To update and maintain all work records, filing and sample storage under the direction of the team leader/ supervisor.
  • To calibrate and check equipment on a daily basis as per AQC requirements.
  • To perform routine maintenance on equipment and report any faults or abnormalities

To apply for this role you should demonstrate:

  • Appropriate analytical testing skills together with underpinning knowledge of chemistry. This would normally be gained by being qualified to a minimum of 2 A Levels or equivalent, one required in science based subject or HNC level in chemistry or, preferably a degree in chemistry or environmental sciences or at least 2 years of relevant practical laboratory experience using a variety of testing equipment for example ICP-OES, Gas Chromatography (GC) etc.
  • Proven ability to accurately follow written and verbal instructions.
  • A high level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good problem solving capabilities and confidence to react promptly.
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal.
  • The ability to work under pressure and to strict time deadlines.
  • Proactivity and the ability to multi-task in fast paced environment.

Ideally you will also have:

  • Familiarity of using a laboratory information management system (such as LIMS or Labware), along with familiarity of using Microsoft office programmes
