Saturday Matron - Senior Boys Boarding House

OB TITLE: MATRON - WARDS

DEPARTMENT: DOMESTIC BURSAR SCHOOL: SENIOR SCHOOL

REPORTS TO: HOUSEMASTER, DOMESTIC BURSAR, ESTATES BURSAR

PRINCIPAL PURPOSE:

- To support and be responsible to the Housemaster for the smooth running of House life.

- To maintain informal contact with pupils, providing motherly presence when required.

- To intervene when behaviour is unacceptable or when discipline is required.

- To be aware of Wycliffe rules and uphold these and other standards of the School community at all times.

To formulate and develop routines to ensure the appearance of all House areas are well organised and tidy.

KEY TASKS:

- Early identification and reporting of all damage, defects and repairs needed throughout the House to the Housemaster. In case of emergency fire safety, and in the absence of the Housemaster reporting to the Risk Manager or Estates Bursar.

- To be alert for any improper or illegal activities ranging from anti-social activities, bullying, substance abuse, unsafe practices involving electrical equipment, and disregard of social rules and carry out the appropriate actions as and when required.

- To ensure the safe storage and security of electrical equipment, chemicals etc in locked storage cupboards when not in active use.

Pupils' Health Care and Welfare

- Attend to pupils' minor ailments at any time necessary; prepare drinks and light snacks, liaise with Housemaster/Nursing Sister about pupils' health and if necessary assist in their admission to the School Medical Centre. Ensure safe storage of medicines within the House, maintaining records of any medical issues/medication administered.

- Work to uphold (with the Housemaster and other staff) standards of dress (both in and out of uniform), good manners and behaviour amongst pupils by personal example.

- Accompany any pupil visiting the hospital, GP surgery, dentist and other necessary visits as required by Housemaster.

Laundry and Sewing

- Laundering of uniform, games kit and casual clothes, duvet covers, towels.

- Any running repairs of pupils' school clothing and for labelling clothing. Security and Safe Practice

- Primary responsibility not only for the security of individuals and property in the House and for the organisation of sound practice to reduce risk, damage and loss with particular regard to:

- Control of access to the House by visitors, both authorised and unauthorised.

-To be responsible for Fire Safety, Health & Safety, & safe use of equipment, as advised by Wycliffe's Health & Safety Co-ordinator.

ADDITIONAL TASKS:

Parents

- May be required to show prospective parents, pupils and other visitors around the House, to meet new pupils on preliminary visits and to meet new pupils at beginning of each year.

- Assist the Housemaster with entertaining parents on special occasions such as the start of term, Speech Day etc.

House:

- Work up to 5 days before and after each term to open up and close down the House.

- Preparation of Houses for holiday lets and organisation of cleaning up after lets in liaison with Domestic Bursar.

- Ensure self-catering and recreational areas are correctly used.

- Responsible for ensuring Housemaster is aware of all stock requirements including food and drink.

- Extracting answerphone messages and acting upon and recording all such messages.

In-Service Training:

To attend training sessions as and when required in order to improve the quality of the pupil's experience

OTHER TASKS:

- Be familiar with the College's Safeguarding policy and comply with its requirements to safeguard and protect the welfare of children.

-Understand and comply with the College's Health and Safety Policy statement.

- Work with all staff to provide information requested by them for the efficient management of Wycliffe's financial and other administrative purposes to support the effective pursuit of Wycliffe's educationaland pastoral goals.

-Undertake any other key tasks which the Head may reasonably assign.
