Appointment of Communications, Advocacy and Learning Director

Join us in this new role to help us build belonging in Gloucestershire.

Barnwood builds belonging. We work with the people of Gloucestershire to bring the county closer together, exploding myths about disability and mental health. By sparking new community connections, sharing ideas and providing grants, we enable people to shape where they live and discover new opportunities. Something wonderful happens when people gain a sense of being part of a community. Togetherness is empowering and means people can take control of their lives and then support others in similar situations. We also have long-established relationships with organisations across the county – through sharing ideas and experience, we support them to think about disability, community, housing and opportunities differently. Everything we do works towards creating closer communities in Gloucestershire by sparking that sense of belonging.

Having ensured that our organisation is set up to achieve our ambitions for the county, this is a new and unique opportunity to lead the ongoing development and delivery of Barnwood Trust’s strategy for county-wide engagement in our vision for the future – creating the conditions and environment in which we can fulfil our mission as a catalyst for durable social change with people and in places and organisations across Gloucestershire. The implications of our work go way beyond Gloucestershire, and we want to maximise that potential. The new Communications, Advocacy and Learning Director will lead a range of activities which create an environment across the county which is receptive to input from the Trust, in particular from the Social Change Team, with outcomes that meet the Trust’s overall strategic objectives. The role is also responsible for ensuring visibility, positioning, clarity and coherence around the Trust’s identity externally and internally, as well as a widespread awareness of issues affecting the lives of disabled people and people with mental health problems across Gloucestershire – motivating people to take action for positive change. The role will need also to identify how to enable the work to achieve visibility and impact outside Gloucestershire, whilst still working within the Trust’s Objects of focusing in the county.

This role presents with an intellectually stimulating context and requires not just a leader with vision, but also with a strategic approach, and experience of devising and implementing organisation-wide, multi-media communications, marketing and branding strategies, and external campaigns based on research, policy and practice. The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate their ability to contribute to community-building and a movement for social change. We are seeking someone with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, integrity and resilience, creativity and adaptability, and a positive attitude, as well as passion around making a positive difference to the lives of people with disabilities and those with mental health problems. A genuine commitment to the vision, mission, core principles, strategic aims and values of Barnwood Trust, and to behavioural and social change and influencing will clearly be key to thriving in this opportunity.
