Acquisitions Manager
Hours: 32 hours per week
Salary: £30,000 per annum
Main duties and responsibilities
This post supports the editorial teams throughout the acquisition process and manages the implementation of the terms agreed. The post holder supports both books and magazine editorial teams.
The acquisitions manager will attend the weekly acquisition meeting and provide support and guidance in the drafting of offer letters and advise on any existing issues with the rights holder or other parties. Once agreement has been reached, the post holder will assist with drafting contracts as required, and will resolve any remaining issues with the licensor, in order that contracts can be finalised and signed. This will include any subsidiary rights contracts including print, electronic and audio formats.
The acquisition manager will also be responsible for agreements with magazine contributors, and for drafting and concluding agreements for all sublicensed editions of Granta magazine.
The post holder will monitor the payment of advances, ensuring that they are paid in a timely and accurate fashion, and authorising payments, and will notify authors and their agents of remaindering if required. When rights sales are negotiated, the acquisitions manager will handle the notification of rights sales to the relevant departments.
The acquisitions manager will also deal with any permission requests for material from frontlist or backlist titles, and will handle reversion requests.
A detailed understanding of the wide range of publishing agreements applicable to books and magazines, plus top-notch negotiating skills, are key to success in this role, as is accurate and up-to-date record keeping, including updating all contract details on the shared system, and updating the common database with rights information for all acquisitions, as well as noting any territorial restrictions. Any subsequent sales of rights will also be recorded.
