Salary: £58,500 - £61,750 + 10% Bonus + Excellent Benefits - performance related increase at the end of 6 month probation

Canon (UK) Ltd is the UK marketing and sales operation for the global company - Canon Inc - based in Tokyo, Japan. In the UK and Ireland Canon currently employs around 2,050 people in various locations in the UK including the Head office in Surrey.

The purpose of the role of the Senior Legal Counsel is to provide commercial legal support to the Canon UK and Ireland businesses, advising on compliance with relevant national and European laws and regulations, together with Canon UK and Canon Europe internal policies. The work is varied and will give the successful candidate scope to develop their learning in different scenarios within the legal environment, working with the business in developing workable solutions.

Duties of the Senior Legal Counsel:

• You will be providing commercially minded legal support on a variety of matters for both the business to business (B2B) part of the business (e.g print hardware and software/solutions) and the Consumer Imaging Group (B2C) (e.g cameras).
• Also provide legal support to Canon support functions including Procurement, Credit Control and Contract Management.
• Particular responsibility for drafting, negotiating and advising on B2B contracts for print hardware, print software/solutions and services, print outsourcing/Managed Print Services, including private and public tenders.
• Responsibility will also include supporting the creation of contracting templates and legal guidance notes for the business and advising on a broad range of commercial contracts (including supply, distribution, selective distribution, sponsorship, leasing, etc), marketing issues (including advertising and promotions in both the business and consumer areas), competition law issues, data protection, litigation/dispute management, intellectual property, anti-bribery and corruption, corporate compliance and others as required from time to time.
• Using your training skills you will provide training to the business as required e.g. competition law and participate in Pan European (PE) legal working groups and assist Canon Europe in relation to local or PE issues as required from time to time.
• Review and assess risk/legal implications of relevant company strategies and activities, making recommendations for change, as required.
• Working to performance targets, you will have a varied case load, will be challenged and developed as we encourage you to own your development with the support and guidance of your Manager.

Requirements of the Senior Legal Counsel:

• Significant experience of drafting, negotiating and advising on commercial contracts in a lead role coming either from a legal practice (with some in-house experience) or in-house environments.
• Some specific experience in relation to hardware/software/services contracts.
• High levels of competency in in-house commercial law topics such as competition, data protection, advertising and/or a willingness to learn.
• Fluency in English required
• Evidence of continuing expansion of technical and company knowledge, skills and competencies will be expected.
• Basic competency in relevant computer systems and packages.
• Driving license useful although this is an office based role.
