Job Title: Resident Sports Graduate

The School is a delightful independent standalone prep school of 430 boys and girls aged 2 ½ to 13 set in 260 acres of beautiful Sussex countryside. The tremendous grounds include a Forest School and a School Farm. The school has a proud record of feeding many of the top day and boarding schools in the South East, with a large proportion of leaving students achieving scholarships and awards.

Main Purpose of role:

  • To assist the Sports Coach and Games Teachers with sports coaching.
  • To promote good sportsmanship throughout the playing squads, by positive encouragement of team players.
  • To communicate positively with parents and colleagues.
  • To be a proactive and committed member of the Sport Department.
  • To take responsibility for other tasks in and around the school

Key Responsibilities are:

Coaching Duties

  • To take lessons in timetabled games' lessons.
  • To coach a variety of games as directed by senior Sport Department staff.
  • To referee /umpire and act as team manager for a team on match days.
  • To supervise children in changing rooms before and after games lessons and matches with other Sport Department staff and dismissing children at the end of the school day
  • To take part in the inter-house competitions, eg referee /umpire house games and assist with other house competitions such as Swimming Galas, Cross Country and Athletics.
  • To select teams and distribute lists to fixtures team prior to matches, team sheets and information for matches as directed.
  • To write and display match reports on the notice board in the Sports Hall.

Other Duties

  • Participate in the general day to day activities of the school as a whole and undertake a share of the staff duties. All staff are expected to attend, Open Days and Training days as required by the Headmaster.
  • Assist in various sections of the school as guided by gap Coordinator
  • Be available for some weekend and evening commitments
  • Eat all meals with the children as available.
  • Reflect the school's ethos when dealing with parents, children and the local community.
  • Demonstrate a high level of commitment and flexibility, contributing to the wider curriculum through games and activities and the life of the community as appropriate
  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of children in the School.

Standards and Quality Assurance

  • A suitable person to work with children under the terms of the Children Act and other relevant legislation.
  • Support the aims and ethos of the school, and contribute to and support the spiritual side of school life.
  • Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality and attendance.
  • Uphold the School's behaviour code and uniform rules.
  • Participate in INSET and undertake appropriate further training as part of the professional development programme.
  • Attend team and staff meetings.
  • At least three days before term starts should be kept available for preparation and Inset sessions.

Performs any other duties commensurate with the position level as directed by the Director of

Sport/Gap Coordinator.

The candidate:

The successful candidate will be:

  • Be educated to Degree level
  • Have the ability to teach sports taught at the school ( a coaching qualification to teach rugby would be a distinct advantage)
  • Have a successful sporting career
  • Have coaching experience in a relevant environment
  • Have good IT skills
  • Be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Be able to work as part of a team and be approachable, friendly and cheerful
