The Premises Department is responsible for repairs, maintenance and improvements to the buildings and facilities at the Theatre Royal Plymouth (Royal Parade) and at our Production and Learning Centre TR2 (Neptune Park Cattedown). The team plays a vital part ensuring that all our visitors have the best possible experience.

A vacancy exits for a one year fixed term full-time Theatre Caretaker to join our Premises team reporting to the Premises Manager and contributing to the Operations team. The Theatre Caretaker will be responsible for keeping the highest possible standards of repairs and maintenance and operation of all plant at the Theatre as well as ensuring the highest standard of presentation of the Theatre’s external grounds and gardens. Providing assistance to the Premises work at TR2 will also be required.

You will enjoy being accountable for your own work and skilled at collaboration across the Theatre Royal teams and visiting artists and companies. The presentation of the Theatre, externally and internally, is vital to the quality customer service we offer all our visitors.

The hourly rate for this role starts at £7.83 per hour, rising to £8.32 per hour following successful completion of the probationary period.

The Role

Here is an overview of what you would be doing:

  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance tasks and repair of electrical/mechanical equipment including working on air handling units, pumps, heating plant, lighting, refrigeration, fire containment systems, hot and cold water systems, drains, sewage pumps, windows, lifts, doors, fire doors and lifting equipment
  • Plan works schedules and communicate effectively with all colleagues, contractors and internal customers
  • Supervise contractors engaged to provide services including adherence to statutory obligations and best practice
  • Update Premises Manager with work schedules, incidents and operational requirements
  • Undertake regular walk-arounds with colleagues to improve communications and identify maintenance issues
  • Utilise the Premises Department software to its full capabilities
  • Implement the organisation’s health and Safety policy, best practice and current legislation to all work and to help protect themselves, other staff, visitors and customers
  • Assist the Premises Manager to ensure all statutory inspection and certification is current and updated at all times
  • Assist with general housekeeping tasks including painting, decorating and the upkeep of the external grounds including the entrances, fire exits, gardens, refuse areas, loading bay and scene dock
  • Place orders and assist in controlling the budgets
  • Assist with pest control
  • Play a proactive role in delivering our objective of increasing energy efficiency
  • Act as callout response for the Theatre and contribute, when necessary, to the opening and closing of Stage Door
  • Prepare for and represent the Premises team at internal and external meetings communicating content and action points where appropriate
