Chartered Building Surveyor
An exciting, and unique, opportunity has been established at the Diocese of Guildford. They are seeking an experienced Chartered Building Surveyor to help support in their new strategic mission
The Diocese of Guildford straddles the North Downs, from tiny rural communities to the busy commuter towns, with areas of challenging social deprivation and great affluence in sharp contrast.
Guildford is one of 41 dioceses which cover the whole of England. We have 162 parishes, 82 church schools and several hundred social and community projects, and our area includes two-thirds of Surrey (including Egham, Banstead, Dorking and Farnham), parts of North East Hampshire (including Farnborough and Aldershot) one parish each in Sussex, and one in Greater London.
The region contains over a million people, and are there for everyone, providing opportunities for young and old to pray, to explore their faith, to make a positive impact locally and globally, and to observe major life events such as a wedding, christening, confirmation or funeral. The churches seek to be at the centre of every community, to reach out to those in special need, and to encourage all their members to grow into their full potential as children of God.
The Diocese has 217 church buildings which see more than 25,000 people worshipping on an average Sunday, in addition to many thousands more of all ages who use those buildings or neighbouring Church halls on weekdays for church activities and community clubs and meetings.
Each of the parishes is an independent charity, with their own leadership and governance structures, working together under the leadership of the Bishop of Guildford and his team, so as to make the very best use of their resources across the region. Every one of the 1 million or so people who live in the area has a parish church, and access to its support and facilities when they need them most, often at life events such as Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals.
With more than 200 residential houses with a value in excess of GBP150m, the real estate and property portfolio represents the largest capital asset by far. Many of these provide clergy housing located nearby church and parish facilities and buildings across 163 parishes. Developing a comprehensive strategy to ensure all these buildings support today's ministry and mission whilst optimising potential income streams, will be a key contributor to fulfilling the Dioceses of Guildford vision.
As the Chartered Building Surveyor (working closely with the Property Director), your skills will be key to helping develop the property portfolio and processes, ensuring effective management and maintenance of buildings and land. You will manage the property administrator and build up a reliable and trusted network of suppliers, including building contractors, architects, surveyors, engineers, and letting agents.
This is a great opportunity to join the team at a time when you can have a personal impact and influence on delivering their strategic mission.
You will have significant experience of general practice surveying and will hold a relevant professional qualification (such as MCIOB or MRICS).
You are expected to have experience of managing projects and prioritising competing demands, and in providing advice on property matters to a broad and varied audience who may be without property experience.
You should have outstanding negotiation and communication skills along with excellent analytical and influential abilities. It is also vital you are able to work flexibly and productively across organisational boundaries and within the ethos of the Diocese of Guildford.
