Lampshade maker - hand sewer, with some organisational input
Handmade lampshade technicians. This is a great opportunity for someone who loves making beautiful things (particularly hand sewing), is organised and has experience within a production environment. There is lots of potential for development within this busy, friendly family-run company.
Based at: Workshop/factory in Portslade
Hours: Full-time, permanent with review after 3 months. (We are only looking for permanent members of staff due to the make up of the team)
About A Shade Above: A Shade Above (est 1983) is a bespoke handmade lampshade maker supplying to the Interior Design and Lighting Industries. Clients use A Shade Above because of its high quality product, knowledge and experience of Lampshade design and ability to produce exactly what they want.
There are two main departments at A Shade Above, the soft shade and the laminated shade department. The soft shade team produce stretched, pleated and gathered shades around a frame and their work is based around hand sewing (7 permanent members of staff plus freelancers) . The laminated lampshade team (comprising currently of 4 members of staff) essentially laminate a variety of fabrics (mainly silks) to laminating cards and attach to metal rings to create the varying shapes and sizes. A Shade Above has a very large and prestigious client base both in the UK and Internationally.
Handmade lampshade technicians ( 2 required) - stretched and pleated lampshade maker (Sewing based)
Successful applicants must have the ability to handsew accurately, carefully and quickly have an eye for detail and finish with a responsible attitude to the work as we have to meet very specific delivery deadlines. Lampshade specific training will be given. Relevant training/experience might be: embroidery, upholstery, costume-making, dress-making, working in a production environment.
There would be some administration involved in this role as support for our production manager so it would suit someone organised and looking to develop within the company.
Recruitment process for shortlisted candidates: This can vary depending but generally in the first instance, this will involve a supported trial session, show-round of the workshop/factory and interview with possible further trials.
