Job Purpose:

Forestry Engineering Wales (FEW) is a Wales wide unit within NRW.

The team is made up of 30 professional engineering staff, located throughout Wales.  FEW is primarily responsible for constructing and maintaining a safe network of roads, bridges and water control structures across the Welsh Government Woodland Estate.

We are unique throughout the civil engineering sector, in that we retain the in-house skills to produce our own construction aggregates, using mineral resources located throughout the estate.  This enhances our reputation for the best practice application of sustainable construction techniques.

The is a specialist role to assist the Country Civil Engineer in achieving Natural Resources Wales’ policy and targets in Wales, through developing and maintaining relevant skills and standards, and managing the risks associated with structural assets and liabilities across the estate.  Working with FEW, you will perform the role of technical expert, providing colleagues in other teams with vital support and advice.  You will use your specialist knowledge of structures to identify and investigate problems, carry out feasibility studies and prepare conceptual design solutions and briefs.

You will lead on design, structural assessments, procurement and supervision of bridge/structures inspections, to provide technical advice in relation to bridges and structures and on other civil engineering matters supporting the wider programme of civil engineering upon the Welsh Government Woodland Estate.

Job Specific Criteria

  1. Graduate with a BEng in Civil/Structural Engineering - Essential.
  2. Evidence of formal training in Bridge Inspections – Essential.
  3. Significant experience of bridge design, assessment, inspection and maintenance using Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and the Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works. (MCDHW)  - Desirable
  4. Experience in the Asset Management of Highway structures and working knowledge of the ‘Management of Highway Structures - Code of Practice’. – Desirable.
  5. Working knowledge of the Inspection Manual for Highway Structures Vol 1&2 2007. – Desirable.
  6. Working knowledge of DB63/07 Inspection of Highway Bridges. – Desirable.
