ENGLISH HERITAGE
Volunteer Development Manager
Location: Belsay Hall & Castle, Belsay, Ponteland, Northumberland, NE20 0DX
£28,000 pro rata
21 hours per week, Fixed Term Contract to October 2018
Ref: 10632
Working in close partnership with the Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens team as well as the wider Belsay Awakes Project Team, you will play a key role in coordinating and delivering new volunteering activities as part of an exciting Round Two Heritage Lottery Fund application.
As part of our strategic plan, we are looking to find new ways to involve more people in our work. Our heritage is for everyone and people are keen to participate in protecting and illuminating it.
Volunteers form a key part of that collective movement to ensure the past is protected for future generations and the historic environment is understood, valued, cared for and enjoyed.
Joining the team based at Belsay Hall, you will help drive forward the next phase of our volunteering plans for the Belsay Awakes Project, to provide quality experiences to engage with the history and heritage of local communities through volunteering.
Volunteering can help English Heritage involve the public in a way that is different from interaction with paid staff as it develops skills on both sides of the manager-volunteer relationship; and it capitalises on the variety of skills, experience and knowledge that volunteers bring.
Working towards the submission of a Round Two HLF application, we intend to expand our volunteering offer, strengthening best practice in our existing volunteering programmes whilst also broadening our appeal to be more inclusive. In this role, you'll have the opportunity to shape how we welcome and support volunteers at Belsay Hall, as well as shouting about the impact that volunteering can have.
You will be taking our outline volunteer plans and developing them through consultation and proactive engagement with new audiences who will value and act as advocates for the heritage of Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens.
You will build relationships locally to understand barriers to participation and develop innovative and engaging ideas to facilitate access to new opportunities.
You will have a passion for working with volunteers and enjoy being a part of a busy team with constantly changing priorities. As a confident communicator, you will be comfortable building rapport with staff and volunteers and using your skills to ensure good practice around the recruitment, training, support, retention and recognition of volunteers.
As a natural problem solver you will seek to use your initiative to overcome practical issues that come up as part of supporting volunteering at historic properties. With the ability to lead on the development of processes and procedures, you will be able to also manage the unexpected when it arises.
Your delivery style will demonstrate the English Heritage behaviours of Collaboration, Innovation and Empowerment in everything that you do.
You will have a thirst for continuous self-development and be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of the voluntary sector. Highly collaborative, you will work to engage a range of stakeholders to support the charity's objectives. With the ability to influence and challenge where necessary you will build strong working relationships across a variety of levels within the organisation.
By joining us you'll enjoy the rewards of a great team environment and an inspiring location, helping to make our site a wonderful place to visit and work. You'll also be joining our charity which through our 400 historic monuments, buildings and sites, brings the story of England to life for over 10 million visitors each year.
You'll find it's a workplace like no other - taking you behind the scenes of these extraordinary sites and supporting you to share your ideas, inspire others and make a difference
