Purpose of job

  • To provide high quality childcare that meets the professional inspection standards.

  • To provide a stimulating and effective curriculum, which will enhance children's emotional, social, physical and intellectual development.

    Responsibilities

    Childcare & Education

  • To assist the Senior Early Years Educator working with the designated age group.

  • To provide high quality childcare for children and their families.

  • To provide a broad and balanced curriculum that will meet the requirements of relevant national and local standards.

  • To assist the Senior Early Years Educator in ensuring that the Nursery is suitably prepared for all relevant inspection requirements including Ofsted.

  • To establish Individual Education Plans (IEP) for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

  • To support parents/carers in the successful admission and transition of their children to the Nursery.

  • To liaise and provide professional advice to parents/carers and other professionals involved with the child - including attendance at case conferences and reviews as required.

  • To organise and participate in interesting and appropriate educational visits for children and families, observing Health and Safety policies as below, and carrying out risk assessments.

  • To maintain client confidentiality.

    Additional duty of care

  • To report any injury or accident ensuring that Health and Safety of the individual is maintained

  • To report any suspicious or suspected non-accidental injury, in accordance with the Local Safeguarding Children's Board guidelines.

  • To assist the Manager and Senior staff in providing professional support to parents/carers and outside agencies, on issues relating to child protection.

  • To take responsibility for a group of children during any building evacuation.

  • To take responsibility for securing the building and resources as required.

    Record-keeping

  • To observe, monitor and maintain general written records to ensure children's developmental progress.

    To be responsible for updating the profiles of children in the post-holder's Keyworker group.

    Student supervision

  • To supervise student placements.

  • To prepare accurate and concise information in support of a student's development.

  • To prepare and present accurate and concise reports regarding student progress, to the Manager and/or college tutors.

    Policies

  • To actively promote and support the Nursery's policies on Equal Opportunities, and to ensure the Nursery functions in an anti-oppressive manner.

  • To observe Health and Safety policies, both within and beyond Nursery premises, including to support the provision of children's trips outside the Nursery.

  • To be familiar with, and to comply with, the requirements of all other North Leeds Community Nursery's policies, procedures, and staff instructions.

    Promoting the Nursery

  • To maintain a positive and professional manner at all times*, both within and beyond Nursery premises, in promoting the Nursery to parents/carers, visitors, and other members of the community. (*This includes responsible and professional behaviour in the use of any internet social networking sites, or other public forums.)

  • To take care of the Nursery environment as required, inside and out, ensuring that it presents a clean and tidy appearance at all times to children and visitors.

  • To undertake other duties commensurate with the post, as required by the Nursery Manager or Senior staff.

    Relationships

    The promotion of positive relationships of trust and care is considered a priority. The post-holder will work as part of a team, and will maintain close and professional working relationships with all colleagues, parents/carers, children and other agencies in the promotion of good childcare.

    Physical Conditions

  • The post-holder will work from a single-storey building in a residential area.

  • The Nursery operates a non-smoking policy.

  • There will be regular lifting and handling of children and equipment required.

    Social Conditions

    Annual Leave

  • 20 days minimum, increasing 1 day per year of employment at the Nursery, up to a maximum of 25 days.

  • This allowance includes 3 or 4* whole-Nursery days to be taken over the Christmas period - see below.

  • (*This will vary each year, depending on the calendar.)

  • Plus 8 statutory holidays.

    Hours

    37.5 hours per week - pro rata for part-time employees.

    The Nursery is open 7.45am - 6.15pm, Monday to Friday, for 51 weeks of the year, closing from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day inclusive.

    Flexible working, early and late shifts form part of the normal working pattern.

    Economic Conditions

    Salary

    GBP14,313 - GBP14,625 (dependant on age) per annum - pro rata for part-time employees

    Health Benefit scheme in place with Simply Health.

    Prospects

    Promotion

    The constraints on positions available within the Nursery's small staff team mean that there will be limited opportunities for promotion. However, the Nursery will of course be keen to retain and develop able and committed staff as far as is possible.

    Training

    All staff are expected to maintain a current awareness of professional and service issues, including a sound knowledge of core developmental theory and the needs of all children.

    All staff are expected to be responsible for their own development.

    Opportunities for further training and development will be made available.

    Qualifications

    One of the following:

    NNEB/CACHE Diploma/B TEC in Nursery Nursing or Childcare and Education

    NVQ 3 or above in Childcare and Education

    B(Ed) in an appropriate Early Years subject.

    The Nursery is covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 and any applicant is obliged to disclose ALL convictions and cautions, no matter how long ago they occurred and regardless of whether the offences were committed as an adult or a juvenile.
