Job overview

The role of an embedded electronics systems design and development engineer is an essential part of what TfL does. As the number of journeys on our network increases and more is expected from our transport network, these engineers need to make sure our infrastructure and equipment can face future challenges.

What will I be doing?

You'll design and develop new solutions using knowledge of electronics, hardware and software to deliver innovative concepts. These new products allow conceptualisation and testing of new solutions by the operational business.

Beyond this immediate challenge, you'll also consider other factors affecting optimal lifecycle costs such as value engineering, manufacturing, installation requirements and maintenance burdens faced by the organisation.

The degree-level apprenticeship provides an exciting opportunity to make a huge impact on the millions of journeys customers make across London each day, developing innovative solutions and concepts to ensure the current and future infrastructure can deliver the safe and reliable service our customers deserve.
What will the programme involve?

You'll complete a number of placements whilst on the scheme that will develop you into a fully rounded design and development engineer. Placements will include:

  • Design work - these are typically office based although you will get some time on site and in the laboratory for testing. For example your placement could be on the blue lights PTI concept. This is a hardware/software and integration project, including testing to LU requirements for the blue lights concept that highlights the gap between the train and platform for customers.
  • Frontline transport operations - You could complete a placement on the data logger project which includes developing the required software/hardware to allow a data logger to be installed and interfaced with control systems that will assist with diagnostics and crowding issues.
  • Developing new engineering technologies - this would include testing, compliance and health and safety activities, using hardware and software skills gained to create solutions.
  • Safety - A placement here could be on the active gap fillers concept. This is a feasibility and development study on filling the platform/train gap using a mechanical filler.

What training and support will you get?

For the duration of the scheme you'll have a business sponsor that is responsible for the design and delivery of the apprenticeship scheme. They will help secure the right placements for you and support you in your professional development. You'll also have a mentor that'll support and guide you sharing their knowledge and expertise. Finally you can expect to have a buddy, either a previous apprentice or graduate from this scheme. Your buddy can answer any day to day questions you have and share their experiences with you.

During the scheme you'll not only complete the qualification but also have opportunities to complete additional training courses. These will vary from soft skills training to technical skills training. Your sponsors and placement managers will ensure you attend all the relevant training to support you in your role.

What do we look for?

You will be highly motivated and proactive, with a passion for engineering. If you're a logical thinker with a strong ability to problem solve to tackle technical challenges then this scheme is the perfect way to kick start your career.

Where can this career take me?

On completion of the apprentice scheme you'll have gained experience across a range of areas from stations, rolling stock and different business areas. This will open up a large number of junior engineering roles for you. The current Director of Engineering and Major Projects Director for TfL both started as a technician apprentices so it can be seen that the apprentices can aspire eventually to senior management positions.
