Healthcare Assistant
£10, Cheadle
40hpw (10:00am to 8:30pm)
Summary
We have an exciting opportunity for a Healthcare Assistant to join our world leading research project at our head office in Cheadle. The successful candidate will have experience in phlebotomy and of processing samples; you will work as part of a busy team on a rota basis. The project is intended to provide comprehensive brain, body, cardiac, carotid and bone imaging on a subset of 100,000 volunteers. The Imaging Centres are open for 13 hours a day, 7 days a week with the aim of processing 18 participants per day.
The Role
As part of this vibrant team the Healthcare Assistants responsibilities include participant venepuncture/measures (including interview) and basic laboratory processing. The Healthcare Assistant will be trained in all relevant areas. All imaging centre staff will work together as a team to ensure UK Biobank participants have a positive experience during their imaging assessment.
The successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly explain procedures and instructions to participants. You will also have the ability to carry out repetitive tasks to a high standard with a keen eye for detail.
You will have experience of working in a regulated medical environment with the ability to follow strict protocols and procedures ensuring confidentiality at all times.
The Organisation
UK Biobank is a major national health resource set up with the aim of improving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of serious and life-threatening illnesses. Between 2006 and 2010, UK Biobank recruited over 500,000 volunteers from across the country to take part; all donated biological samples for future analysis, provided detailed information about themselves, and agreed to have their health followed. Enhancement projects are now underway to add further value to this valuable research resource.
Duties to include:
* Appropriate equipment set up and QC procedures during start and end of the day
* Greeting participants and correctly verify their identity, explaining the processes and procedures involved in their visit
* Participant venepuncture/measures (including medical interview)
* Obtain samples in a way that does not lead to contamination, they must maintain specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, and by following UK Biobank standard operating procedures.
* Adhering cardiac monitors to participants
* Directing and assisting participants through their imaging centre visit.
* Assessment of physical measures
* Responding to participants requests for information about their imaging assessment.
* Maintaining general cleanliness/tidiness of the imaging centre, in particular the blood donation and physical measurement stations.
* Maintaining cleanliness of laboratory area
* Monitor laboratory temperatures
* Basic equipment maintenance
* Work closely with imaging management team at coordinating center to maintain quality of samples and escalate issues
* A willingness to expand your role with the potential to learn some aspects of ultrasound and ECG
To succeed in this role you will need to meet the following criteria:
* Experience of working in a clinical or medical environment.
* Previous experience of venepuncture would be desirable but is not essential.
* Excellent interpersonal skills and be able to clearly explain procedures and instructions
* Ability to undertake repetitive tasks to a high quality.
* Must be able to demonstrate excellent manual dexterity.
* Disciplined in relation to following protocols and procedures.
* Must be proficient in IT (Microsoft Office).
* Must be able to maintain confidentiality when working with information and associated patient information.
