ABP's Humber facilities offer customers close links to markets in mainland Europe and Scandinavia and expertise in a broad range of cargoes, including energy, vehicles, roll-on roll-off, containers, bulks, liquid bulks and forest products.
Although retaining its strong connection with the fishing and food industry, Grimsby is the UK's major car import terminal and is at the forefront in serving the developing offshore wind energy industry.
Grimsby River Terminal can accommodate vessels carrying up to 3,000 vehicles and the port handles more than 500,000 vehicles each year as both imports and exports.
The Role
We are looking for a Deckhand to join our team, to carry out all instructions from the Marine Services Manager and Coxswains, ensuring compliance with the ABP HES Pilot Launch Crew Instructions and Approved Codes of Practice "The Embarkation and Disembarkation of Pilots.”
This position will lead you to gaining the knowledge and experience required as time goes on, including gaining qualifications along the way, to potentially becoming a Coxswain in the future.
Accountabilities
- Assist the Coxswain with the Health, Safety and Welfare of the vessels/pilot Launch, (all on board and equipment) and shore side facilities
- Respond to emergencies within the work area, on board or as directed by the Marine Services Manager, Assistant Dock Master(s), VTSO's
- Assist The coxswain for the "safe Navigation" of the vessel/ Pilot Boat whilst underway and Keeping a good lookout at all times
- To ensure safe access and egress and to accompany Pilots, passengers other members of staff who may step aboard the vessel/pilot launch deck either underway or moored up
- Assist the coxswain for the safe mooring of your vessel/pilot launch in tidal and non-tidal waters
- Give situational reports as directed by the coxswain regarding weather and sea state condition to VTSO's
- Keep the Pilot Launch log up to date and Conduct Man overboard drills at least once a month as instructed by the coxswain
- To maintain a clean and safe vessel/pilot launch as directed by the coxswain.
- To acquire the requisite knowledge and experience to allow eventual progression to the position of Coxswain

Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate will be from a Port, Naval or Maritime background, having been at sea in a deck capacity.
Essential:
- Efficient Deckhand Certificate (EDH) or Royal Navy deck equivalent
- Basic Sea Survival
- 1st Aid at work
- VHF Operations and procedures (Minimum ROC)
- Full driving licence
- Be able to work under own initiative and be part of a team
Ideal:
- Fast workboat/Pilot boat experienced
- RYA day skippers or working towards RYA coastal/day skippers qualification
- Knowledge of ABP Health, Safety, Welfare and environmental Policies, practices and procedures
- Understanding the complexity of working in extreme weather conditions
- Understanding the complexity of working and covering 24 hours 365 day rotating roster
- Computer literate
- Must be willing to undertake and give further training as necessary
